Matt Moore - Evan Longoria Type Extensions

Matt More just sign an extension for 5 years at $14M with three club options that buy out his 3rd arbitration year and 2 FA years worth about $38M over the length of the entire contract.

Who on the Reds should we sign like this?

I don't know why Votto wasn't signed to a Jay Bruce type of extension.

Bruce and Cueto were both signed to extensions, aside from those two maybe Leake, but not at crazy money.

Well, Matt Moore was a highly touted prospect with 17 days of Major League service time. On the Reds, we have Devin Mesoraco, a highly touted prospect with all of 18 games of Major League experience. Would anyone be comfortable signing Mesoraco for at least five years at this point?

Because Votto doesn't want to be locked up beyond his arbitration years. You can't sign a guy to a contract against his will.

I meant Votto being signed after his 2008 or even 2009 season, not his MVP season.

I would have no problem signing Mesoraco to an extension similar to Moore's contract! Will save money on ARB years and even if he fails it's not a bad cost for a backup.

Votto did have some depression or anxiety-related issues early in his Major League career. Perhaps the Reds were overly concerned about his durability?

Additionally, I don't recall that Votto, as a prospect, was ever as highly regarded as Moore or Longoria, so the Reds might have been a bit more cautious about a long-term extension. As it happens, Fangraphs actually had an interesting take on whether Votto's outstanding performance was predictable, which obviously has some bearing on whether the Reds should have been more enthusiastic about a Longoria-style extension.

The Rays signed Matt Moore after 17 IP, Evan Longoria after 17 PA, James Shields after 340 IP! All I am asking is why not sign Votto:

    at the end of 2008 - .297/.368.506 w/ 24 HR and 84 RBI

    in the middle of 2009 - .322/.414/.567 w/ 25 HR and 84 RBI

I mean I can't blame the guy for wanting to leave after is Arbitration years are up. Starting in 2008 he had amazing stats for 25, 26, 27 year old and the Reds wouldn't offer him anything. I blame the Reds for not getting it done like Bruce and Cueto early on.

Exactly. Tampa's doing it the right way and it's the only way to keep talent long term on the cheap. By now it's too late without considerably more money to keep Votto into his 30s if that's still the gameplan. The fact that Cueto and Bruce we able to get long term deals done tells me that Votto must have been offered a 4-6 year deal as well, only Walt either waited too long and/or offered too little.

I find myself losing more and more faith in Walt. If Mes puts up the numbers in 2012 and we don't see a long term deal with him, we'll need to find a GM willing to make it happen.

The GM isn't the problem, it's ownership and their total lack of $$$$

Where is Mark Cuban when you need him?

Now I will say this, I think the only reason that Cueto and Bruce got their extensions were because Walt went to Bob and said that he wasn't going to go through what he's going through with Votto again with Cueto or Bruce.
