If Yu Darvish plays for a Major League team in 2012, he'll be wearing a Rangers uniform. Texas won the rights to the Japanese right-hander via the posting system with a record $51.7MM bid, Yahoo's Jeff Passan reports. MLB has confirmed that the Rangers submitted the highest bid and that it was accepted.
Wouldn't signing CJ Wilson for 6 years been cheaper than paying $51.7M plus his salary which will be around $60M? I don't understand this!
Potentially, but signing a 31 year old pitcher for 6 years carries some serious risk. Darvish, on the other hand, is only 25, so he should be entering his prime, and there are also marketing concerns to consider. A couple of interesting facts about Japanese baseball.
1) The stitches on the ball used in Japan are raised higher than the MLB ball. This allows for snapping off better breaking pitches.
2) In Japan the team's ace wears number 11 or number 18. If two aces happen to match up it is a matter of honor and pride that your team's ace keeps pitching as long as the other team's ace is still out there. So, for example, even if your team is up 5-1 in the 8th inning and your team's ace is at 120 pitches; he will not come out until the other team's ace has.
One question about Japanese baseball. Whatever happened to the "gyro" ball? I think Dice-K was supposed to throw one.

$51.7 million just to bid, and probably another $60-70 million on his contract. That's just insane. This deal is going to hinder the Rangers for years. I have no faith in Darvish panning out like many are expecting him to.
It is unfortunate that he doesn't have Hideo Nomo's pitching style. I could see the 'Whirling Darvish' headlines coming already.

The 51.7 million posting fee goes to the club Darvish was on. Not to Darvish. And if Texas and Darvish can't work out a deal in 30 days, that 51.7 million posting fee goes back to Texas.
Under this system, when an NPB player is "posted", MLB holds a four-day-long silent auction during which MLB teams can submit sealed bids in an attempt to win the exclusive rights to negotiate with the player for a period of 30 days. If the MLB team with the winning bid and the NPB player agree on contract terms before the 30-day period has expired, the NPB team receives the bid amount as a transfer fee, and the player is free to play in MLB. If the MLB team cannot come to a contract agreement with the posted player, then no fee is paid, and the player's rights revert to his NPB team.

Hmm, that seems like a system that could be rigged very easily. A team could put up an impossibly high posting fee and offer an unreasonably low contract, ensuring no one gets him. What's there to stop a team from doing that, especially if a divisional rival is in the mix?
