I would hate to see what Beane would ask Walt for Bailey now.

i've been getting the feeling that Coco is inevitable. If so, I hope it's not for more than one year and any more than $5M. I'd be more inclined to hope for a bpunce back seasn for Massett than any appreciable improvement from Coco (or the status Quo for that matter).
Madson would do, I guess, but not north of $10M. It would be better to go after a younger closer with a reasonable contract or at least some club control.maybe sign Lidge or Qualls and let Marshall close. I wouldn't mind adding a young hammer to groom or the spot. Who's next on the list down on the farm since Boxberger is gone? Christiani?
Not interested in Cordero, regardless of the price. Madson is intriguing, but I think he'll be looking for big money. If it's 2 years and 20 million, then I might be interested.
I don't know what kind of money Oswalt is looking for and I realize there are injury concerns there, but what about offering him a one year deal to be the closer? I know he's never done it but maybe it's a way to protect his back and have a John Smoltz-like late career renaissance. Worth a shot at least.

Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.
No, I talked to Doug about him in the minor league forum, according to Doug, he's got a funkly delivery that at the lower level is fooling hitters a lot but his fastball is average, probably college polish and that delivery are fooling guys right now that won't work once he hits higher levels. Sure was disappointing to hear after seeing those numbers.
This is what I'm thinking. The Reds are one of the few teams left in need of a closer. Offer Madson 2/$20M and sell him on the idea of racking up 40 saves for two seasons and then signing another big contract in the 2013 offseason when there might be more suitors on the market.
If we've got $12M left to spend, we might as well spend it on quality. Madson is an excellent relief pitcher and much better compared to any of his peers than any of the LF names I've heard tossed around on this forum...
I'd rather have Madsen than Cordero. I just think Cordero's best years are behind him. I also believe in bringing in some new blood rather than the same ole same ole.
I'd rather have Votto than Madsen if he's going to be ultra-expensive.
Put Homer Bailey in the closer spot and forget about it
In 3 full seasons, Homer Bailey has yet to eclipse 20 starts in a season due to some typical arm or shoulder minor problems.
No way the dude is able to handle reliever duties. If I thought he could, I would sign Oswalt or Kuroda, and move Bailey to the bullpen to help it. But I think he is too fragile.
Isn't this logic backwards? If Bailey is more fragile, why WOULDN'T you want him in the pen? Decrease the amount of pitches and mileage on his arm..
I wouldn't mind seeing him given a shot at the closer role if for whatever reason he doesn't make it as a starter.. I think he's got the mentality and demeanor for it. It might suit him if he can't put it all together starting.

Homer doesn't have the mentality to be a closer.
His calling card is that he collapses when anything bad happens behind him. He does not handle adversity well, and that is a major disqualification for being a closer.
