Especially starting pitching that is of the caliber of Oswalt.
No way we're going to add 7 to 8 million to the payroll at this stage. Just not gonna happen. And that seems to be the minimum he's asking for.

I don't think the Reds will do it either.

But..........I think they should if they're really going for it this year.

I said it before in the Fielder thread....they are my darkhorse this year. I am predicting them to win the NL East.

They are putting together a nice team. They really need to improve defensively up the middle. That's their biggest need for improvement. I don't think they will overtake the Phils or Braves and maybe not the Marlins but they should be much better and an above 500 team. Something they have never done in DC.

Jonny Gomes signs with Oakland per ESPN. I don't see it posted on Redszone anywhere yet. Not sure it deserves its own thread though, so I noted it here.

Lidge for $1 million is a ridiculously good deal.

I just can't pick them to win the NL East when they have to face that monster of a pitching staff in Philly. In my opinion, the Phillies are still the cream of the crop in that division, even with Ryan Howard hurt. The Nats will be good but not on the level of Phillies good.

I would not have been in favor of Rick Ankiel at any point in the winter until now. A lefthanded hitter with good power would be a nice player to bring to camp on a minor league deal. I know Willie Harris is there, but Harris cannot play centerfield. Remember the big pinch hit home run Ankiel hit for the Braves in the 2010 division round in San Francisco? I like that kind of potential in a pinch hitter.

I was hoping they would agree to a minor league deal with an invite with Drew or even Hermida, but Ankiel has been so putrid the last two years I'd like ro avoid him altogether.
