Cubs Get Rizzo fior Cashner - Theo Making Moves

Cobs trade for Anthony Rizzo - looks like the Padres wanted Alonso to own first base after all. Epsstein continues to make moves that I have to admit, I like, and from a Reds fan standpoint - I hate!

Agree. It is so effortless when you can evaluate. Though I wonder how much credit the Cubs actual GM Hoyer is being given.

I haven't been all that impressed with these moves. He's cleaning house, which he should do, but he's not really acquiring guys that are going to drastically turn the franchise around.

Perhaps not in 2012, but by 2013, the Cubbies could be on the upswing. And Theo could only be amassing trading chips to deal for deadline deals.

I agree - the Cubs aren't going to contend immediately but Theo is quickly dumping deadwood and problems, picking up young talent and restocking their near term prospect base, while conserving the future payroll capability that a large market team has. Once he has the cleanup done and some young talent in place this could spell a totally different Cubs organization than we are used to seeing. I make 2014 the turnaround year. Also the year they dive back into the FA market big once they have their house in order.

Rizzo is a great target for the Cubs.

Meanwhile the Reds need to lockdown a quality closer if they want to win this division or even win a playoff spot.

I like this deal for the Cubs, especially with Theo knowing a lot about Rizzo from his days in the Boston organization. As far as the other deals they have made, I see a whole lot of meh...

Have the Cubs sent compensation to Boston yet for hiring Epstein?

This trade was an absolute theft on the Cubs part. The power is legit, he's young and if the allegations against Castro go nowhere, that's two guys you can build around offensively.

I haven't read on it very recently, but the last I heard, it was likely going to be put in the hands of Bud Selig.

Is the power legit? He had 2 power seasons, but had none leading up to it. He's never been a great OBP guy and his defense isn't anything to write home about either.

He could pan out, but he's far from a sure thing.

He was diagnosed with cancer and lost most of the season to treatment the year after he was drafted, so I'm not sure how much should be taken from his first 1+ years of pro ball. Still, you're right that he's no sure thing, not that many 22 year olds are.

And Jed Hoyer's now had him in 3 different organizations already, that's kind of different.

Remember when Pujols was a Chicago 1st base thought?

One wonders if Marlon Byrd could be had?

Only signed through 2012. Relatively cheap. Worth it to anyone? The million dollar question is... what would it cost?
I have a love-hate relationship with Albert Pujols. Mostly hate.
