Brian Esposito getting invited goes to show you how far having great intangibles can get you in the baseball world. Supposedly, he's unselfish, 'plays the game the right way', is excellent with developing young arms, teaching/writing scouting reports, etc. I think it's pretty obvious that you have all those things if teams are willing to hire you following a .558 OPS over 12 minor league seasons.

However, tons of catchers get invites to ST because they need warm bodies to work with all the pitchers.

Exactly. Esposito is playing baseball as a playing coach basically NOT because anyone desires him as a major league backstop. He works with pitchers in ST and coaches pitchers from behind the plate all season long in the minors and helps real catching prospects develop their defensive and game calling skills, too. The guy is worth every nickel they pay him if he is good at what he does - and I don't mean specifically his catching and hitting.
