Ryan Madson and the Reds are in serious talks about a new contract, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com*reports. Cincinnati GM Walt Jocketty*maintains interest in Francisco Cordero and is eyeing Kerry Wood*as a possible alternative.

The Marlins and Rangers have ‘thought’ about Madson and*the Phillies recently checked back in on him,*Heyman*tweets. However, a deal with Philadelphia seems unlikely at this point, since the Phillies already signed closer Jonathan Papelbon.*The Yankees aren’t interested,*tweets*Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports.

Angels GM Jerry Dipoto said last week that the Angels are "very, very unlikely" to sign Madson or another free agent closer.*Dipoto said today that the Angels are “looking to create depth” in the bullpen, MLB.com’s Alden Gonzalez reports.

The Angels already have Jordan Walden, so hopefully that hurts their chances of landing Madson in some way.

Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

The fact that it's Heyman reporting it makes me hesitant to believe it word for word.

Good point. Heyman is basically Boras' mouth piece. Could just being trying to rebuild the market.

    Here's to hoping.

Having Madson for the 9th inning would be the best I've felt about the 9th inning since... well, Jeff Shaw? Danny Graves circa 2000? A long time either way.

    Get it done Walt.

Yep. He has already reported that the Angels were talking to Boras about Madson, after the Angels said they absolutely were not. Heyman also linked the Cards and the Rangers to Madson just the other day.

i am unimpressed with the remaining free agent LF options. if the Reds can spend their money on Madson (with a reasonable deal) then I'd be happy to dumpster dive for a 5th outfielder (ie a Lance Nix type) and a starter or two at AAA for depth. then get ready for the season.

if the Reds are in the hunt mid season and need an outfielder they could add a little payroll for the playoff drive then (assuming attendance is good).

6:42pm: A source with the Reds downplayed the team's interest in Madson, according to John Fay of The Cincinnati Enquirer (on Twitter). MLB.com's Mark Sheldon hears that Cincinnati is unlikely to get serious about the righty unless he drops his asking price.

Didn't it already get reported that Madson was looking at one year deals, or something like 3/24? Or was that simply speculation?

    My sentiments exactly. Get Madson.

People come on, this is Boras we are talking about. I would bet the Reds and him have exchanged numbers, but for the info to be getting leaked, you know what side it is coming from. Pot stirring.
Hugs, smiling, and interactive Twitter accounts, don't mean winning baseball. Until this community understands that we are cursed to relive the madness.
