Every player on the club has been younger than me for longer than I care to remember. At least there are still coaches and staff older than me but even that is getting close.

“I don’t care,” Votto said of passing his friend and former teammate. “He’s in the past. Bye-bye, Jay.”

NY Times baseball blog talks about Moyer (with a quote from Bryan Price):

Moyer won the 268th game of his career last night, becoming the oldest pitcher in major league history to win a game.

Buster Olney told a pretty good story this morning. When he was covering the Orioles, Moyer was demoted from the starting rotation, and Olney interviewed him. Moyer said his arm still felt good and he thought he had a lot of baseball left in him. Olney admitted to thinking, "This poor guy, he should just hang it up. He's had a nice career but it's time to think about doing something else for a living."

That was 17 years and over 200 wins ago.

There was a staggering statistic that Elias posted today -- Jamie Moyer has pitched to 8% of all hitters in major league history.

    That's mind boggling.

I understand Moyer regards Cap Anson as the toughest hitter he has ever faced.

And the interesting thing is, he doesn't really rely on a novelty pitch like a knuckleball or a spitter that have extended other pitchers' careers. He just pitches.

He's only five degrees of separation from Babe Ruth.

Moyer made his debut against Carlton, who made his debut against Larry Jackson, who pitched in his debut against Hank Sauer, who played in his debut against Paul Waner, who played his first series game in 1927 against Babe Ruth. Moyer/Ruth…FIVE degrees.

And speaking of Cap Anson, this from the same link:

The oldest player in baseball in Jamie Moyer’s first season (1986) was Pete Rose.

The 2nd oldest player in baseball in Pete Rose’s first season (1963) was Stan Musial.

The oldest player in baseball in Stan Musial’s first season (1941) was Charlie Root.

The oldest player in baseball in Charlie Root’s first season (1923) was Babe Adams.

The oldest player in baseball in Babe Adams’ first season (1906) was Patsy Donovan.

The oldest player in baseball in Patsy Donovan’s first season (1890) was Cap Anson, who started his career in 1871.

    Some guys Moyer has faced.
Opposed Steve Carlton in his MLB debut.
Pitched against Tony Perez (missed Pete Rose who sat himself that game), Mike Schmidt, George Foster, Steve Garvey and U.L "Toothpick" Washington.

    Here is his 1986 gamelog

I'm starting to feel really old. I didn't think 1986 was that long ago.

I find that to be amazing. Six degrees from Cap Anson and 1871. Wow.

I was in a bar the other night watching the Giants and Pirates and talking to this kid sitting next to me. Pirates manager Clint Hurdle came out to the mound. I said to the kid, "is that Clint Hurdle? Damn, he's old now. I remember watching him play".

The kid said "wow", unsarcastically. It was like I was talking about Walter Johnson. Little punk.
