I don't think he was a bust, but I also think he never realized his full potential. Pena could have been-- had the talent and bat speed-- an All Star, but needed more time to simply play. In retrospect, Pena would have been better served to have played full time from the time he came up. Cincinnati should have dealt one of their OF or Casey to make that happen. Dealing Casey for pitching just after 1999, for example, could have been very interesting.

Having said that, this is 20/20 hindsight GMing. No way anyone could have seen this coming.

I know I'll be following Pena's career in Japan. He's young enough to post a monster season or tow there and finish his career in the States. His original agent should be drawn, quartered and eighth'd!

He's the definition of cautionary tale regarding Major League contracts.

Since 15+ months has passed since this original post, and we now have another full season of data, things aren't looking overly bright. I know the kid is still only 21, but there is not a lot to like at this moment.

My sense is that Duran's only chance of making it is if he dedicates himself totally to the game and his readiness for it. There's no doubt he has the power. But it's apparent that his growth spurt and physical limitations beyond that have held him back severely. By all accounts, he is a very clumsy outfielder. He has serious issues with making contact. It's very possible that he will catch up with body, but he'll have to work like the dickens to do that, whether it's agility training or endless BP or whatever. He will have to build his skills. That order is even taller than he is. I don't know if he has it in him. Maybe he does. But if he does, I still don't know if it will be enough. He is a long, long, long way away from being a ballplayer, much less a big-leaguer. (A caveat: This comes from someone who has never seen him play. Maybe there's more hope than I sense.)

If he doesn't pan out as a hitter he could be a good candidate for the mound.

Juan Duran over his last 10 games: .361/.442/.694/1.136 ... is he starting to figure things out, or is this just a case of a hot streak and small sample size?

Overall for the year he's up to: .255/.321/.412/.733

He still needs to learn first base because he's not a good OFer. Hopefully he is turning a corner.
