Reds Designate Carlos Fisher For Assignment

By Tim Dierkes [February 8 at 1:01pm CST]

The Reds designated righty Carlos Fisher to open a spot on the 40-man roster for Ryan Ludwick, reports MLB.com's Mark Sheldon. Jeff Francis' minor league deal with the Reds was also finalized.

Fisher, 28, has compiled a 4.74 ERA in 98 2/3 innings across stints with the Reds in each of the last three seasons. Fisher, a native of Duarte, California, was drafted by the Reds in the 11th round in 2005.

Always liked Fisher, but he seemed to get the yips when he pitched in the majors. He's got some stuff, more stuff than a few guys who stuck ahead of him (Jordan Smith for example). I wish him well but can't fault this choice.
All my posts are my opinion - just like yours are. If I forget to state it and you're too dense to see the obvious, look here!

Roster moves typically get the sticky treatment for a few days.

While I don't think Fisher would have been the first choice with all things being equal, his lack of options probably made him the reasonable choice.

Moving forward, we're going to try to only sticky news of medium to high importance and that have reasonable potential for significant discussion. I'd put this one in the minor category, but I do understand why the moderator made it a sticky for the reason doug mentioned. Still, I don't want to "dilute" the importance of stickied threads.

I think Fisher will always have a small place in Reds lore from that marathon extra inning game he threw against the Phillies. The dude manned up and left it all out on the field that day.
...the 2-2 to Woodsen and here it comes...and it is swung on and missed! And Tom Browning has pitched a perfect game! Twenty-seven outs in a row, and he is being mobbed by his teammates, just to the thirdbase side of the mound.

Options. I think if Fisher still had them, he wouldn't have been DFA'd and Negron would have. But Fisher is out of options and sans probably 2-2 injuries for relievers this spring, he wasn't making the team and was going to be DFA'd anyways. So instead of potentially losing two guys by letting Negron pass through waivers (I doubt someone would have picked him up, but solid defensive shortstops with a few tools don't always go unselected even after poor seasons) instead of Fisher now, they just chose to go with Fisher now.

Solid, very logical explanation. I had wondered about this myself.

Fisher cleared waivers, assigned to AAA and was invited to Spring Training according to Reds Twiter.

That is great news. That keeps Fisher in the Reds system and provides depth.

The Reds assigned Carlos Fisher to Triple-A after he cleared waivers, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. The right-hander, who was designated for assignment last week, receives an invitation to Major League Spring Training.
