So, my nerd fu is apparently weak, because I'd never heard of "The Guardians of the Galaxy" (as a comic book) until I saw the first teaser trailer a few months ago -- but this looks pretty damn good:

One of the things I love about it is that DC is like "People won't go see a movie about Wonder Woman" and Marvel is like "Here's a movie with a homicidal talking raccoon, have fun."

Not as articulate as I would have put it but what Raisor said.

watched Xmen: Days of The Future Past and I give it an A. It worked because they took out some of the more difficult plot points from the comics. Looks like the next movie will deal with Age of Apocalypse and I wonder if we will finally see Mr Sinister and Cable. At this point, I think Xmen vs Avengers will work.

The time lines get confusing for me. Professor X and Magneto are young in 1962 but by 1980, when they visit Jean Gray (X-Men Last Stand)....they are really old. Yet in this one in 1973 they are still really young but 7 years later they are not.

I know a lot has changed since I quit buying X-Men comics after 1981, and this is based on the Uncanny X-Men story, which I had and sold in the mid 90's like an idiot.
It just gets confusing. So many characters and timelines all out of whack.

Chef was great. Enough food porn for the foodies, enough family drama for the casual movie fan, and plenty of eye candy for any red-blooded male. None of it was over-the-top--the kitchen world created by Jon Favreau seemed very realistic to me. As far as movie-making goes it doesn't offer anything new, but there's plenty to like about a well-made movie on a topic I love...

edit: I guess the Twitter side-story/tangent/style was fairly innovative. I don't remember Twitter being as engrossed in any other film, and most of the movie's best jokes stemmed from it.

Re: Official RedsZone Movie Thread (pt. III)

I went and saw the new X-Men movie mostly because my sister in law watched the kids and my wife and I wanted to go to a movie on a rare date night. I left feeling the same way I always feel leaving superhero movies. Uninspired and bored. I have never really liked any of them and I could never understand why. But, I recently listened to a podcast called "Do You Like Prince Movies?". It is a Grantland podcast and the two guys (Pulitzer Prize winner Wesley Morris and Alex Pappademas, who is a comic book guy) summarized it perfectly. I would really recommend listening to it if you are growing increasingly disappointed with movies like this. I believe it is the episode release on May 7th.

If you listen to the podcast, they discuss the lack of mystery in these movies and in most big blockbusters now. These movies are simply presenting stories we already know. Look at the big franchises of the last 15 years:
    Happy Potter
    Hunger Games
    All the Superhero Movies
    Lord of the Rings

All of them are known plots where the audience is ostensibly waiting to see things they have previously read/know about. Hollywood knows that this formula sells, so they will continue to follow it. There is very little "discovery".

I was disappointed in the new men as well. I heard a lot of good things about it, but from people that did not read the comics. Comics are a perfect formula because you are going to attract the die hard fans and people that don't know the stories at all. It's not going to end any time soon.

The marvel movies have all been great.

The Xmen films by Fox have been hit and miss ( with Days of future past being the best of the bunch)

The Spider-man reboot has been ok

The movies actually produced by Marvel are the tops

I would say a good number of people who went to see any of those movies had not read the books, though. Obviously, a lot of people read the Harry Potter books, and Tolkien, but I would guess that the amount of people who went to see those movies outweighs the number of people who read the books by a good amount.

I'm sure large chunks of the audience went into those movies knowing what was coming. That happens less in comic book movies, because their storylines aren't quite as well known.

I'm not saying that these movies aren't/can't be good, entertaining, and fun. But, working with previous and known source materials brings alot of baggage. A large swath of the audience will know what is coming. You have to stay true to the character/established universe/existing storylines.

Put it this way, I have enjoyed the Harry Potter movies, many of the superhero movies, and the Lord of the Rings movies, but none of them gave me the feeling leaving the theater that the Matrix did. None of them. The Matrix (like Star Wars, Back to the Future, Indiana Jones, etc...) took me to a world I had never seen, set up rules and parameters that were new, and drew me completely into that world.

I knew the X-Men world even before the first film came out. I knew the Harry Potter world. I knew the Lord of the Rings World. I knew the Spiderman World. The best of those movies provided me with a new perspective on the stories I knew, the mediocre ones tried to put a visual to the story I already knew, and the bad ones made a mockery of the subject matter. It is the inherit limitation of that type of film.

Now, if you go into comic book movies and know nothing about them, then maybe you have had the same reaction I had to Star Wars the first time. But as these movies get bigger and bigger and come out more and more, those people are getting harder to find.

Re: Official RedsZone Movie Thread (pt. III)

To piggyback on what I just wrote, I am bitterly disappointed that the new Star Wars movie is going to involve the old characters. That tethers the story to the previous timeline and potentially limits what the story can do. It can also lead to some annoyingly and needlessly corny moments (like all of the C3P0/R2D2 stuff in the prequels).

Lucas built an excellent sandbox of a universe full of toys to play with. Make another story. Start another mythological tale in that universe. You have all of time and all of that universe to play with. I really don't want to see a sad old Han Solo.
