Appleton Papers to shed 330 Dayton area jobs

I can't believe this. I worked there several summers as a college kid and met a lot of really, really good people. This stings.

DAYTON, Ohio —Appleton Papers has informed West Carrollton city government that the company will let go of 330 workers at its West Alex Bell Road plant.

About 100 workers will remain at the plant, Bill Covell, economic development manager at West Carrollton, said he was told Thursday.

Cutting 75% of your work force? Man, that is a huge cut.

    Yep, it's a devastating blow.

The plant had 3 paper machines, a recycle plant, and a thermal paper coater. Of all that, they're only going to be running the thermal coater and they'll supply it with Domtar paper.

It's really going to hit my hometown of Carlisle hard. I counted about 15 or so kids I went to high school with who had parents employed at Appleton (including myself, but my father retired about 2 months ago, just in the nick of time.); and about 10 people who I went to high school with had started working there full-time themselves.

    It really, really sucks.
