2014 Free Agents - really any chance of else keeping Votto?

    Top 2014 MLB Free Agents

By Tim Dierkes [February 27 at 8:32am CST]

Extensions have a way of thinning the free agent herd. The latest star player off the board is Nationals third baseman Ryan Zimmerman, who was extended through at least 2019. Zimmerman had been slated to hit free agency after the 2013 season. The best players remaining in that far-off free agent class:

    Corner Infielders
    •Joey Votto, 1B
•David Wright, 3B (if 2013 club option is exercised)
    •Paul Konerko, 1B
•Kevin Youkilis, 1B/3B (if 2013 club option is exercised)
    •Michael Young, IF

    Middle Infielders
•Robinson Cano, 2B (if 2013 club option is exercised)
•Ian Kinsler, 2B (if 2013 club option is exercised)
    •Asdrubal Cabrera, SS
    •Chase Utley, 2B

    Corner Outfielders
    •Hunter Pence, RF
    •Michael Morse, LF
    •Nelson Cruz, RF
    •Alex Gordon, LF
    •Shin-Soo Choo, RF
    •Corey Hart, RF
    •Carlos Beltran, RF

    Center Fielders
    •Jacoby Ellsbury, CF
•Curtis Granderson, CF (if 2013 club option is exercised)
    •Adam Jones, CF

    Catchers
•Brian McCann (if 2013 club option is exercised)

    Starting Pitchers
    •Tim Lincecum
    •Dan Haren
    •Matt Garza
•Adam Wainwright (if 2013 club option is exercised)
•Ubaldo Jimenez (if he voids 2014 option)
    •Josh Johnson
•Ervin Santana (if 2013 club option is exercised)
•Scott Baker (if 2013 club option is exercised)
•Gavin Floyd (if 2013 club option is exercised)
    •Jair Jurrjens
•Tim Hudson (if 2013 club option is exercised)
    •Jason Vargas

    Relievers
    •Joel Hanrahan
•J.J. Putz (if 2013 club option is exercised)
    •Brian Wilson

    Other Players Of Note
    •Jarrod Saltalamacchia, C
    •Phil Hughes, P
    •Joba Chamberlain, RP
    •Glen Perkins, RP
    •Martin Prado, LF
    •Ricky Nolasco, SP
    •Carlos Marmol, RP
    •Geovany Soto, C
    •Tim Stauffer, SP
    •Ted Lilly, SP

In the 2011-12 offseason, we saw five $100MM commitments to free agents, if you include Yu Darvish, who was subject to the posting system. For the 2013-2014 offseason, Votto, Cano, Pence, Ellsbury, Lincecum, and Haren are good candidates, should they continue to produce and reach free agency. Given that we're two full seasons away, a half-dozen others could enter the discussion if 2012 and '13 go well.

Not a chance, once the Reds fall out of contention this season they should start fielding offers.

He should be re-signed, its just speculation on whether he will be or not though. Based on following the Reds all of my young life, I would assume they'll do the wrong thing and let him go.

So what do they do when they don't drop out of contention, but win the division instead?

I asked Joey Votto about his interest in playing for the #BlueJays as a free agent. Did not sense great enthusiasm on his part.

    Interesting.

I am starting to think that Joey will stay with the Reds. Do I have any reasoning? No. Just my gut feeling.
    Let's get weird!

Did you read the article that goes with that twitter quote?

Well if the Reds don't resign Votto I would take half the money it would take to sign him and turn it over to Youkilis I think he will go for around 4 year 50M

    why is BP batting 4th

Reality, this team does not have the offense to win big. They strike out too much and are far too streaky to win multiple play off series.

Then what do you expect from the offense? The offense really should be the least of the problems. They were among the best last year, and I don't expect that to change this year.

There were teams that struck out more than the Reds did last year. You do know this, right? Strikeouts are not the end of the world.

No team is as consistent as you would think, probably.

I don't think it is the wrong thing to let him go, the money he is going to demand is big market money, not a small market team like our Reds. We need him to have another MONSTER year and get all we can for him, it's sad that baseball is a business, but it is what it is.

No way we have enough money to hold on to him. Call me crazy but I was in favor of trading him this past off season to stock up talent in the minors while letting Yonder play first base.

Alonso at first plus the haul we would have got for Votto makes this team much better
