ST: Reds vs. Cubs Mon. 3/12

A brief recap to catch up on things.

    Reds 1st:

Phillips singled. Cozart 1-6-1 DP. Cairo grounds to short.

Cubs 1st: (Not a good one for Bronson)

Jackson lines to right and is thrown out by Daryl Jones trying to stretch it into a double. (bad omen)
    Byrd singles.
Ian Stewart plates Byrd with a double to right and advances to third on an error by D. Jones.
It doesn't really matter as Soriano launches one off Arroyo. That hardly ever happens. So let's write that off as Spring Training.
LaHair singles. First five batters have reached off Bronson now.
Geovany Soto 6-4-3 to end the inning.

    3-0 Cubs.

Reds 6th. Substitutions galore. Anyone worried about Bronson? Minor leaguers start today or tomorrow according to Kelch.

Gregorius on for Cozart. Gregorius waves at a 3rd strike and heads back to bench.
Dorn grounds up the middle and the second baseman fields and fires.
    Negron hitting for Frazier. Ks.

    4-3. Cubs.

    Cubs 6th.

Soriano sends a rocket to the left side. Janish, playing 3rd, fields behind third but his long throw pulls Dorn off the bag. Infield hit Soriano.
Runners goes, LaHair lines to Phipps in CF. Soriano just gets back beating a strong throw by Phipps.
Soto grounds sharply to short and Negron starts a 6-4-3.

    4-3. Cubs.

Let's head into the 7th. Reds batting and looking for their first hit since one out in the third when Cozart doubled in a deuce.

Cubs closer Marmol will be pitching for Chicago.
Janish draws a walk. (He will outplay Valdez and still be sent down)
Ludwick doubles to the gap. They hold Janish at third. 1st and 3rd. Nobody out. Phipps, Corky and Lutz due up.
Marmol sets Phipps down on a high hard one. (Ks don't matter. Ks don't matter.)
Corky is clipped by a pitch, possibly his mustache, to load them up.
Woohoo! Lutz with a broken-bat flair to score a couple. 5-4 Reds. Good things can happen if you just put the ball in play. Nothing happens on a strikeout.
Valaika walks to reload the bases. Just Marmol being Marmol.
Gregorius sac fly plates Corky. Put the ball into play. Score. Funny how that works. 6-4 Reds.
    Dorns skies to left.

    6-4. Reds.

Crowd cheers IHO Ron Santo. My MLB radio wasn't working the first half of the game soooo I have no idea about any comments Marty or Kelch may have had on BA's performance. Or lack thereof as Marty might say.

    Cubs 7th.

Carlos Fischer Ks somebody on a breaking pitch.
Dave Sappelt to the plate. He draws a full-count walk.
Kelch excited as Miller nearly picks off Sappelt.
Janish with a nice grab and his throw is in time to force Sappelt.
Fisher issues his second free pass of the inning. 1st and 2nd. 2 down.
Joe Mather just took Carlos 'Louisville bound and down' Fisher deep. 7-6. Cubs.
Fisher walks his third batter of the inning. Joe Price out to the mound.
Dewitt steals second on the pitcher. Corky had no chance per Kelch.
    Campana whiffs. Damage done.

    7-6. Cubs.

Reds 8th. Kerry Wood tossing for the Northsiders.

Negron shoots one up the middle to get things started for Cincinnati.
Runner going, Janish fouls the ball back. Negron will head back to first. Wild pitch will get Negron to second.
Dusty playing small ball has Janish sacrificing Negron to third with one out.
Ludwick jammed, hits a semi-liner that is picked off by the second baseman. Two down.
Phipps Ks for the second time in two innings. Strikeout does not get the job done. Never has and never will. Opportunity wasted.

    7-6. Cubs.

Andrew Brackman toes the rubber here in the bottom half of the 8th.

Lutz picks off a liner to right for the first out.
Second Cubs' scrub lines a little deeper to right and this one leaves the park. 8-6.
    Brackman walks Blake.
Sappelt walks for the second consecutive at-bat. 7th walk for Reds' pitchers. 5th in the last two innings.
I thought Brackman had fixed his control problems? Apparently not. Now 4 walks in 4 Spring Training innings. That will not work.
Gregorius fields, steps on second and throws on to first. 6-3 DP.

    8-6. Cubs.

Last chance for the Hometown Reds. Need a couple. Here is a name from the past. Marcus Mateo on to pitch the ninth. Reds turned Mateo into Buck Coats in 2007. Good times.

Miller pops to second on the first pitch. Fire up the buses. One down.
Lutz swings at a pitch in the dirt. K. Turn out the lights the party's over.
Valaika grounds out sharply to short. ATODNBTTR.
