EV has/had ace stuff. The problem wasn't talent, it was skill. I don't believe he ever really let himself learn how to pitch. If he does that, let himself learn (all sorts of anecdotal evidence there) The yes, he can still be one. For what it's worth... his last 5 starts:

Learning to pitch isn't the problem. Control is the problem. He has poor control.
If we are using EV's last 5 starts to prop him up, he has a WHIP of 1.38, which would be good enough for 38th in the NL.
He currently ranks 46th out of 48 qualified guys in that category for the year.
Sorry, he just isn't good enough to overcome his God-given talent for walking guys.
[QUOTE=TRF;2903694]Actually I would argue that learning control is at most only a part of learning to pitch and instead is better described as being part of learning to throw. Learning to pitch is learning what pitches to throw, where, when, in what order, from what angle, from where on the rubber, and at what speed and being able to do this knowing not only what you know in advance about the batter but also from being able to read his stance and position in the box. Being adjust on the fly pitch by pitch too is to be learned. Control is step one but without knowing what you are doing it is like knowing the alphabet but not being able to spell.

you guys kinda suck at using the 'reply with quote' option
