ST: Reds vs. Padres Wed. 3/14 (SS)

Chapman pitching for the Reds. 50 pitches, or something in the neighborhood, for Aroldis.

    Phillips 2b
    Cozart ss
    Heisey lf
    Rolen 3b
    Phipps cf
    Jones rf
    Frazier 1b
    Hanigan c
    Navarro dh

    Play some ball.

Good to see that 'slap in the face' didn't land Brandon on the DL. I was figuring it would at least be a day-to-day situation.

Maybin greets Chapman with a flare to right that drops. Runner on first.
And Maybin is picked off before the first pitch is delivered. 1-3-6.
Parrino jerks one out to left. 1-0.
    Guzman caught looking.
Blanks lines a double down the leftfield line.
    Darnell lines to deep right.

    1-0. Padres.

    Reds facing Clayton Richards.

Phillips grounds out to his opposite number.
Cozart also bounces to the right side. Two grounders to second.
Heisey check swing roller. Catcher out front of the plate fields and guns him down.

    1-0. Reds.

Baker rolls one to second. Phillips retires him 4-3.
Liriano rolls one up the middle. Phillips fields but has no play. Infield hit.
(Bray long-tossed on Tuesday and worked bullpen session on the side today. All went well.)
Chapman picks another runner off first. 1-3-6.
Ground ball deflects off the glove of Chapman to Phillips who nips the runner at first. 1-4-3.

If Gameday is right, Chapman has thrown only 16 pitches through two. Sounds a little wonky to me.

    1-0. Padres.

Rolen grounds one down the first-base line that gets through and Rolen slides safely into second.
Phipps lines solidly to center. Rolen is held at third. Runners on the corners with nobody out.
Daryl Jones strikes out swinging. That will never work.
Phipps steals second without a throw. 2nd and 3rd.
Frazier, making a strong bid to make the club, doubles home both runners. 2-1.
Hanigan lines hard right to Maybin. Two down.
Navarro caught looking. Reds take the lead.

    2-1. Reds.

Valdez retired on a grounder to Rolen.
Maybin skies to Heisey on the first pitch.
Aroldis gets a small measure of revenge by striking out Parrino.

Pitch count questionable. I would say around 30 for Chapman. He may go another inning. He threw a ton of strikes.

    2-1. Reds.

Brandon grounds out to short this time.
Cozart rolls one to the second baseman.
Heisey looking fairly miserable this spring. Ks. That's no way to win the left field job.

    2-1. Reds.

Arredondo on. In seven spring innings Chapman has walked one and struck out seven.

Guzman greets Jose with a line single to left.
Arredondo balks the runner to second.
Sa-wing and a miss. One down.
Guzman moves over to third on a grounder to short. Two down.
Flare to left falls in front of Heisey and the game is tied at 2.
Liriano lines hard into the left field corner. Runner comes all the way around and scores on a play at the plate. 3-2.
    Liriano ends up on third.
Clark sends one over the wall onto the party deck in right. 5-2.
    Arredondo strikes out Valdez.

    5-2. Padres.

Rolen set down on a checked-swing strike out.
Maybin makes an over-the-shoulder grab on the warning track of a hard-hit ball off the bat of Phipps.
Jones with an infield hit that glances off the glove of the pitcher over to the second baseman.
Frazier grounds to short who flips to second to force the runner.

    5-2. Padres.

    Ron Mahay on.

And Maybin greets Mahay with a ground single to left.
Cozart fields in the hole but his throw pulls Phillips off the bag. E-6. Two men on.
Cozart dives but can't come up the ball. Heisey fires to third and almost gets Maybin, who had to hold up to see if the ball went through. Bases full of Friars.
Mahay pitching his way to retirement is rocked again. Liner to left. Bases still juiced. 6-2.
Gameday has stopped so I actually have to listen to Kelch. LOL.
Geez. Phipps loses a can of corn in the sun. Two more come in. 8-2. 1st and 2nd still nobody out.
Mahay getting no help from the defense.
Mahay taking matters into his own hands strikes out Blanks.
    Lotzkar warming up.
Back-to-back Ks as Liriano swings and misses.
    Clark grounds to Frazier unassisted.

    8-2. Padres.

Hanigan lines to right to reach. Rally!
Navarro skies to fairly deep left.
A Phillips liner gets down in center. 1st and 2nd.
Runners on the move and Cozart strikes out. Hanigan thrown out. Rally fizzled.

    8-2. Padres

    Lotzkar takes over. Nice.

Sharp one-hopper back to mound for the first out.
Cued liner off the end of the bat hauled in by Cozart for the second out.
Flare to left hauled in by Heisey.
    1-2-3.

    8-2. Padres.

Willie Harris bounces one through the hole. Rally!
    Valaika whiffs.
Little DatDude making an appearance. And he channels big bro with a line drive into left. 1st and 2nd.
Lutz bouncing back to the mound to force mini-Phillips. No double play as the ball pops out of the glove of the Padre defender.
1st and 3rd with two down.
Cairo waves meekly at strike three. Rally fizzled.

    8-2. Padres.

Changes o'plenty for the Reds. Clayton Tanner with an opportunity to shine here in the 7th.

Sawyer Carroll has plenty of distance but the ball hooks foul. Just a loud strike.
D.J. Phillips comes on in a hurry in center to make the catch. One away.
Tanner puts away Blanks for the second out.
Darnell with a first-pitch single to keep the inning alive for San Diego.
4-6 force plays ends the 7th.

    8-2. Padres.
