ST: Reds vs. LAAAAAAAAA Thurs. 3/15

Reds on the road to take on Fat Albert and his newest besties.

    Phillips 2b
    Cozart ss
    Heisey lf
    Cairo 1b
    Frazier 3b
    Phipps rf
    Valdez cf
    Navarro c
    Hanigan dh

Johnny B. Cueto will toe the rubber.

For one of the few times I agree with Dusty:

“You always want to play better,” Reds manager Dusty Baker said. “It’s not just spring training, it’s guys trying to secure jobs on the team and guys trying to impress. It’s not only giving up runs, we’re striking out at an alarming rate. That’s something that we definitely have to get better on that haunted us last year. It’s not just old guys, it’s young guys, everybody.
“We’ve got to pick up our game.”

Re: ST: Reds vs. LAAAAAAAAA Thurs. 3/15

Strike three called and DatDude grabs some pine. Dusty rolls his eyes.
Cozart pops a bunt to the pitcher who lost the ball in the sun. It tips off his glove and Cozart reaches first on an E-1.
Cozart steals second but overslides the bag. Cozart scrambles back as he beats both tags by the Angels second baseman.
Heisey rips one down the line - just foul.
Strike three called. Heisey heads back to the dugout. Dusty rolls his eyes.
Reds cannot take advantage of the error and stolen base as Cairo bounces to third.

    0-0. Nobody.

Erick Aybar rips a triple into the right-field corner. Phipps with a strong throw but no chance to gun down the speedy Aybar.
Hard-hit ball snagged by Frazier at third, he looks the runner back and fires across the diamond for the first out.
Albert "hey, hey, hey" Pujols pops to Cairo at first. The runner holds.
Time out. Something wrong with Dioner Navarro.
He will stay in the game.
Torii Hunter lines one to left. Heisey cuts it off to hold Hunter to a single. 1-0.
Cueto snap throw picks off Hunter.

    1-0. LAAAAAAA.

Todd Frazier pops to the second baseman.
Denis Phipps doubles down the left field line and cruises in to second standing up.
Valdez raps one sharply to Aybar and is gunned out. Phipps moves over to third.
Navarro first-pitch swinging bounces to third.

    1-0. LAAAAAAA.

Wells flails at a ball in the dirt. One away.
Time out. Price and the trainer are going out to look at Cueto, who is pointing at his foot. Doesn't seem serious. Cueto will stay in.
Callaspo rolls one out to right to reach first.
Runner going. Cozart fields and has only one option, throwing to first to retire Iannetta.
Bourjos bounces to Frazier who Encarnacions the throw to first and Bourjos reaches on an E-5. 1st and 3rd.
Conger serves one out to left to plate the second Angel's tally. Error is costly. 2-0.
LOL. Cueto picks off Conger. I guess Conger wasn't paying attention when Hunter got picked off. LOL.

    2-0. LAAAAAAAAAAAAA.

    Hanigan bounces out to short.
Sharp grounder deflected by Wilson to Aybar and they just do nip Brandon at first.
Cozart sends one through the wicket at third. E-5. Cozart motors into scoring position.
Heisey pops up the middle handled by the second baseman.

    2-0. LAAAAA.

Aybar lifts one to Valdez in center for the first out.
    Kendrick walks on four straight.
Ground ball through the legs of Cueto is fielded by Phillips. He steps on the bag and fires to first to double up Pujols.
Pujols is a .269 career hitter against Cueto with no homers and just one RBI.

    2-0. LAAAAAAA.

Cairo lines sharply over the head of the third baseman to lead things off here in the 4th.
Frazier skies off the end of the bat to left fielder for the first out of the inning.
Phipps grounds sharply down the left field line for his second double of the game. A Wells' bobble allows Cairo to score. 2-1.
Valdez chops one to the pitcher who flips to Pujols for the second out. Phipps moves up 90 feet.
Navarro, and does he swing at every first pitch?, floats one out to the charging Torii Hunter in shallow right.
Phipps has been swinging the bat well this spring.

    2-1. LAAAAAAAAAAAAAA.

    Hunter caught looking. See ya.
Wells sa-winggs and misses. Wouldn't wanna be ya.
Callaspo rockets the ball to second baseman Brandon Phillips who fields on the seat of his pants and throws on to first to retire the side.

    2-1. LAAA.

Takahashi takes over on the mound. Reds tried to sign this guy when he was released a couple years ago but lost out to LAAAA.

Hanigan greets him with a single to right.
Brandon replaces Hanigan at first as he rolls into a 4-6 force.
Cozart and Heisey both fly out to center.

    2-1. LAAAAAAAAAA.

Nice four-inning stint for Johnny Cueto. Sean Marshall will take the ball next.

Iannetta Ks on a backdoor breaking ball.
Bourjos draws a free pass with one down.
    Conger swings and misses.
Aybar with a lazy fly to Phipps in right.

    2-1. LAAAAA.

Kevin Jepsen will pitch the 6th for the Angels.

Lutz will take over at first. One pitch, one out. Lutz grounds the other way to third.
Sharp grounder right back to the mound by Willie Harris. 1-3.
Phipps pops sky high. Conger hauls it in near the plate.

    2-1. LAAAAAA.

Seems like a lot of first-pitch hitting in Spring.

Jeff Francis on. He might finish things out.

Brandon Phillips picks and throws. One away.
Pujols cues one back to the mound and is retired 1-3.
Francis gets Hunter to swing and come up empty.

    2-1. LAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA.

Jean Segura sends one down the left-field line and motors around to second.
Ground ball to the right side sends the runner to third. Valaika to Lutz for the first out.
Infield in because, quite frankly, the Reds cannot afford to fall two runs behind.
Ground-rule double bounces over the left-centerfield wall. 3-1.
Didi Gregorius fields and fires to first. Runner scoots over to third.
Two-out ground ball to the right side. Valaika makes the play.

    3-1. LAAA.
