ST: Reds vs. Rangers Thurs. 3/22

    Drew Stubbs 8
    Zack Cozart 6
    Jay Bruce 9
    Scott Rolen 5
    Juan Francisco 3
    Chris Heisey 7
    Devin Mesoraco 2
    Wilson Valdez 4
    Mat Latos 1

First time this spring that Francisco has played first base.
Probably because the Reds have the dugout along the first base line and they weren't sure if Francisco could make it all the way out to third base.

Could be slim pickings on the game thread tonight. Cincinnati Bearcat basketball is on the air.

Rangers got a leadoff homer to take a 1-0 in the top of the first.
Reds came back with back-to-back-to-back doubles by Cozart, Bruce and Rolen to lead 2-1.
No scoring in the second despite a two-out double by Mat Latos.

    Top of the third.

Latos induces a grounder to Zack Cozart for out number one.
Borbon sends a scorcher up the middle to reach first.
5-4-3 gets a pair and the Ranger half of the third comes to an end.

    2-1. Reds.

    Bottom of the third.

Cozart bounces out to the third baseman for out number one.
Bruce, fooled by a changeup, strikes out.
Rolen with an easy chopper to second.

    2-1. Reds.

On to the fourth. Latos still dealing.

Chopper behind second fielded by Cozart who fires to first to get the runner.
(Set back by Madsen today. Chapman's chances of starting the season in the bullpen go up.) http://cincinnati.com/blogs/reds/
Fly ball sends Bruce back to the warning track where he hauls it in.
Solid ground ball to second becomes out number three.

    2-1. Reds.

    Bottom four.

    Francisco. Heisey. Mesoraco.

Francisco easy chopper to second. Grab some bench.
Heisey with a pop fly in short left handled by the shortstop for the second out of the inning.
Mesoraco with a flare to right that bounces off the glove of the rightfielder and into the stands for a ground-rule double.
(Bearcats down by 12 at halftime now lead 46-43.)
Valdez with an infield single off the glove of the Ranger's pitcher. Runners on the corners.
Full count to Latos. Looks at strike three.

    2-1. Reds.

Latos back out for the fifth inning. In 13 ST innings he has issued one free pass.

Soft liner to short and Yorvit Torealba is out number one.
Ground ball to the right side off the bat of Brad Hawpe fielded by Valdez who flips to first. Two down.
(Welch impressed by Latos' approach to pitching at such an early age.)
    Latos strikes out Mike Olt.

    2-1. Reds.

    Home half of the fifth.

Drew Stubbs pushes a bunt down the first base line but the Ranger pitcher makes a nice play to get him at first. Welch says that even though it was a bad bunt Stubbs still nearly beat it out.
Zack Cozart continues his hot hitting. Raps a two-hopper off the right field wall for Cozart's second double of the game.
Ludwick, pinch hitting for Bruce, draws the game's first walk. 1st and 2nd.
Cairo on for Rolen. Ball will fall in short right for a hit. Bases juiced.
Pitching change. Tanner Scheppers coming in from the bullpen. Hard thrower. 94+ fastball. Supposedly he was a shortstop in high school and his team ran out of pitchers. He came on, throwing nothing but heaters, and pitched 6 shutout innings. And now you know the rest of the story.
Frazier will hit for Francisco. Serious cheese per Welch. Scheppers overpowers Frazier on three straight fastballs for out number two.
Tapper to the right side of the mound. The pitcher scoops and fires to retire Chris Heisey.

    2-1. Reds.

    Ranger 6th.

    Masset on.

Miclat gone on a bouncer to Wilson Valdez.
    Strike three called. Sit down.
Shallow fly to leftfield. Willie Harris comes on to make the catch.

    2-1. Reds.

    Reds' 6th.

Mesoraco rockets one into the leftfield corner and is in standing at second.
Valdez sacrifices to the third baseman. Mesoraco moves over to the third.
Harris grounds one through the drawn-in infield to extend the Reds lead to 3-1.
    Phipps will hit for Stubbs.
(OSU beats the Bearcats to move into the Elite Eight. Congrats to the Bearcats for an excellent season.)
Phipps drops one in front of the center fielder as Harris scoots over to third.
Cozart out. Janish in. Phipps steals second. 2nd and 3rd.
Line drive base hit to right-center plates a pair. 5-1.
Janish, fighting for a job, is now hitting .296 with an OPS up over .800.
Swing and a miss and Ludwick is down on strikes.
What got into Miguel Cairo since he came to Cincy? Another line-drive single.
Frazier puts a charge into one but it is run down by Borbon in right-center for the third out.

    5-1. Reds.

    Texas Dave:

Great commentary. Thanks. Sounds like Latos doesn't fool around.

Kelch said Latos had a low pitch count and could have worked another inning but the Reds wanted to stay on schedule with their relievers.

Logan Ondrusek will work the top half of the 7th.

Cairo camps under a high fly just in foul ground and David Murphy is out number one.
Nelson Cruz lines a one-out single into right. And that snaps a string of 11 consecutive batters set down by Reds' pitching.
Softly-hit groundball to Valaika and he gets the lead runner at second. Two away.
Shot into left will fall. With two outs the runner was moving and will easily make it into third. Runners on the corner.
Brad Hawpe goes down swinging. Ondrusek works out of a jam.

    5-1. Reds.
