Earl Scruggs dead at 88

That's Jerry Douglas on dobro. He's generally considered the "Earl Scruggs" of that instrument. He used to do a lot of stuff with Sam Bush and New Grass Revival.

I was also told that a couple of the other musicians were Earl's sons, but that I'm not sure of.

You are right about that. Both of his sons play in his band and are musicians in their own right.
