Well, to be fair, it's a safe bet that we didn't particularly care for the music that our Eighth grade teachers listened to.

Than again, our generation deserves a free pass for one reason: we weren't listening to hip-hop.

And to think, many Foghat fans that I've spoken with consider "Third Time Lucky" to be the band's weakest link. Why? Because it was also a pop hit?
So was the track that neither one of us care for. It just doesn't make sense.

Driving home from work the other day, I had the classic rock station on and they played "Easy Livin'" by Uriah Heep.

I did a major head-bob air-guitar thing while driving (which was probably pretty funny for passing drivers to see this old white guy doing). I can't remember the last time I'd heard that song.

    Yes! A timeless classic.

This band helped pave the way for what is now known today as Progressive Metal , which just happens to be my favorite sub genre of metal.

Uriah Heep - Easy Livin' (1972)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DKxZY0DIxIk

    Uriah Heep - Stealin' (1973)

    The band's other signature track.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0K63pu7nd6Q

Surprise, surprise, two lost Heep AOR hits:

    Uriah Heep - Gypsy (1970)

    Awesome riff.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KI0BO575x8w

Uriah Heep - That's The Way That Is (1982)

A slightly toned-down style, but still, IMO, effective. This proved to be the last AOR hit for the Heep.

While we're on the subject of artists who are best -- and often *only* -- known for two or three AOR classics, I hereby present to you, fellow Redzoners, three lost AOR hits from Nazereth, whose signature tracks, "Love Hurts" and "Hair Of The Dog", are still in heavy rotation today.

Nazareth - This Flight Tonight (1974)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bZ88OCJYSmE

    Nazareth - Holiday (1980)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U7pG2ju5OYk

Nazareth - Love Leads To Madness (1982)

Humorous side note: A Youtube comment poster -- and I'm laughing with, not at, the poster -- for years mistakenly believed that the lyrics to the chorus of this track were "Our love leads to mattress"

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GBwqN0yCB9Q

    Until next time..

Zal Cleminson, formerly of The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, joined Nazareth on guitar in 1979 and seemed to spark a mini-revival. He left after two albums. 'Holiday' was off the second of those two albums, Malice in Wonderland. Malice was an above average effort by Nazareth. Cleminson left in 1980 and was replaced by John Locke. He of Spirit fame. My favorite off of the Malice In Wonderland was 'Showdown at the Border'.

Another rocker off of the Malice album. Not bad either.

In the early eighties I briefly worked at a fast food place that required the employees to wear red and yellow button-up shirts. A girl was wearing her yellow shirt over a Nazareth T, which could clearly be seen, when an elderly lady said to her, "Oh, you've been to the Holy Land!"

    The girl just went along.

    Anthrax - Only (1993)

While the true Metal aficionados will almost certainly tell you that this track may well not be representative of this band's best work, this track from the CD Sound Of White Noise, nevertheless, was the first Anthrax track to receive major nationwide AOR airplay, followed by the track "Black Lodge" from the same CD.

The 2011 CD Worship Music also yielded two AOR hits. It's going to be interesting to see if the revival of Anthrax as a player on AOR radio, coupled with fellow Metal band Machine Head's recent AOR hit "Darkness Within" finally opens the floodgates for Thrash Metal bands not named Metallica, Megadeath or Pantera to start receiving some AOR love. The Million dollar question is why said scenario did not play out years ago, even before Grunge.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQRE_DFk6o8

Seal & Jeff Beck - Manic Depression (1994)

IMHO, this lost AOR hit from the Stone Free: A Tribute To Jimi Hendrix CD is a really good remake. What's not to like? Jeff Beck delivers his usual home run here, and Seal is also solid here in one of his few forays into AOR radio.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DqmrGgrYssE

Steel Breeze - You Don't Want Me Anymore (1982)

If you were even as young as Elementary School age in the Fall of '82, you are likely to at least have a vague recollection of this former Pop/AOR hit. The mean guitar licks are what separate this from the standard Synth/Power Pop of the time, which also explains why this was actually a bigger AOR hit (#9 peak) than a Pop/Top 40 (#16 peak) hit.

While this Band, named after the Classic line from "Shine On You Crazy Diamond", is often mistaken as a One Hit Wonder band, it is not the case. Their follow up single "Dreamin' is Easy", which few recall, peaked at #30 on Billboards Pop/Top 40 chart, but received little (if any) AOR airplay.

Tune in tomorrow for more lost AOR hits.

Wilco - Outtasite (Outta Mind) (1997)

Yet another band (more or less) relegated to AAA (Adult Album Alternative) radio today, much to my chagrin. As if I needed anymore proof that today's practice of splitting Rock Radio into sub formats really bites. Oh, well..I've never forgotten this one.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YcaGlJGijj0

Corrosion Of Conformity - Albatross (1995)

This is the track that placed this Raleigh-based Hard Rock band on the National AOR radar.
The band, which is currently working on a new album, also has three other AOR hits - spanning from 1995 to late 2000 - to their credit, as well as the track "Big Problems" from the Clerks Movie Soundtrack.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rKPicUnsPPg

Sting & Jeff Beck - I Been Down So Long (1986)

Here is a rarity for you..

Not only is this a Closet Classic/lost AOR hit from the Spring of '86, it is nearly impossible to find; it was released on a (now) long out of print LP Various Artists: Live! For Life, for Cancer research. In case you are curious, here is a link to the track listing.

    http://www.amazon.com/Live-Life-Stin.../dp/B001DYZKFC

This track also feature some other performers - some well known. Sting will introduce them as you listen to this track.

Re: Album Oriented Rock (AOR)--A dying radio format.

Continuing the changing of the styles/genres theme with more lost AOR hits.

Michael Bolton - Fools Game (1983)

Yes, it is the Michael Bolton. Your eyes (and ears) are not deceiving you. Before he went the Lite FM route, M.B actually had four AOR charted hits to his credit. Only one of them - 1988's remake of "(Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay" - was also a Pop hit.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NukzQZM-1Qk

Richard Marx - Have Mercy (1987)

Another artist who went the Lite FM route. But before he did, he had 7 AOR charted hits to his credit - one of them previously posted in this series by Captain 13. This was also off of his debut album and is only one of two that were not released as Pop singles, so they are easily forgotten.

Side note: Richard is now back to rocking, as evidenced by his newer material receiving airplay on Class X radio. http://classxradio.com/

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=re2tewxW7tg

ABC - That Was Then But This Now (1984)

Best known for the Pop hits "The Look Of Love" and "Poison Arrow" - both of which also received a decent amount of AOR airplay back in the day - this band went for a harder-edged sound on the follow-up album, alienating fans and nearly losing the recording contract in the process - this AOR hit notwithstanding.

The band later regrouped later on in the decade with a return to a Pop style with more Pop hits. "When Smokey Sings" this aint.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_I3NuwDY5n8

LRB - Playing To Win (1985)

If you've already figured out (without looking it up) that LRB is/was just another incarnation of the Little River Band, go to the head of the class.

With John Farnham replacing Glenn Shorrock on vocals, among other personnel moves, this sounds nothing like the original Little River Band Sound, but the harder-edged sound fit in well on AOR radio at the time - this track was a big AOR hit in early '85.

I also distinctly recall the original band's well-known previous hits "The Night Owls" and "Lonesome Loser" - IMO, the bands best all-time track - receiving extensive AOR airplay. But, for a few tracks here or there over the years, the Little River Band was not known as a fixture on AOR radio; they were a mainstay on Pop/Top 40 radio.

Re: Album Oriented Rock (AOR)--A dying radio format.

In what I've always thought was a strange move, Cold Chisel drummer Steve Prestwich (who died two years ago of a brain tumor) joined LRB in the mid-to-late eighties. For those who don't know, Chisel was an Australian hard rock group known for heavy (and often serious) songs that went against the New Wave tide. Prestwich wrote a couple of their more pop hits. Don Walker, keyboardist and weapons designer, wrote most of their stuff. Lead singer Jimmy Barnes sang the original version of "Working Class Man" and sang with INXS on "Good Times" from Lost Boys (he also did at least part of a tour with INXS after Michael Hutchence died.) They also had a first-rate guitarist named Ian Moss. Oh, and bassist Phil Small. We always leave the bassist out.

I lived in Sydney during their heyday and am still a fan.

Here's a song Prestwich and Barnes co-wrote (warning, S word once). I've heard this one played on American radio.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UJJV1nruUUA

    And their biggest hit:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cFKxbr4_-Vc

btw, Chisel wasn't bigger here because Barnes didn't get along with their record company, even writing a kiss-off song.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ciDn9aUKENE

Barnes went on to feud with Jonathan Cain, who was producing a solo record for him, and others. They say he's sober now, but from recent recordings I've heard, he's destroyed his voice.

One more. A Prestwich song that LRB covered when he was with them. Frankly, their version didn't hold up. I see on youtube that Uriah Heep covered this as well.

Sorry. I'm a big Cold Chisel fan.
