The days most of us first heard of Joey Votto

In honor of Joey's milestone, I thought it might be a good time to bring these back:

the team the Reds are headed toward in a few years:

    C - Miller
    1B - Votto
    2B - Bergolla/Lopez
    SS - Olmedo
    3B - Encarnacion
    RF - Kearns
    CF - Pena
    LF - Dunn

Obviously it won't pan out exactly like that, but that's the current target team. My guesstimate is that said club wouldn't be any good until 2006 at the earliest.

[2006? who knew M2 was such an optimist?]

If I'm Tony Womack, I'm asking for some of that $225 million

I'm pretty sure I said some stuff about Votto when he was in the system that would look bad if it was brought up now.

I got Cueto right, I got Votto wrong.

I wasn't on here when Joey was drafted, but I specifically remember that I was pretty unhappy that they overdrafted someone in that slot.

He is reason #1 why I don't get as fired up about specific draft picks anymore unless it is an egregious situation.

Same with that guy who was ridiculed for instituting the take a strike philosophy which Joey later noted helped him in his development. Who was that guy again?

I took my 2 teenage daughters to a game back when Bruce had just come up and Votto had been up for like a year. They both wanted Bruce jerseys. I told them at the time that Votto would end up being the better player.

They ended up getting Votto jerseys.

Smart girls. I was pretty smart too.

Pretty nostalgic to read through those threads and read posters we haven't seen here in a long time..
[Phil ] Castellini celebrated the team's farm system and noted the team had promising prospects who would one day be great Reds -- and then joke then they'd be ex-Reds, saying "of course we're going to lose them". #SellTheTeamBob

"Impressive physical specimen. Hard worker." Yep.
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

    Two thoughts:

    - Seeing the names of prospects in Votto's class and how much of a utter crap farm system the Reds had in the early 2000's.
    - Scott Hatteberg.

    Great post Chili.

Votto is the only one left in the system for that last thread!?!?!? Only a couple ever even contirbuted at all.....on the field or with trade value?

Dear Lord I really have blocked out how horrific the Reds system was back then.

I think Denorfia's the only other MLB player from that 2002 draft.

I believe I remember stating that he'd never hit LHP.

Re: The days most of us first heard of Joey Votto

My absolute favorite thing about early days Votto was the consensus baseball industry opinion that he was never going to be near as good as Cubs prospect Brian Dopirak.
    I'm not a system player. I am a system.

My overwhelming Votto memory was the Orioles balking at him being included in the potential Bedard deal and holding out for Bruce.

If you want to have a good cry, check out the players that were drafted AFTER Gruler in the first round.

Heck, the Reds could have had a draft of Hamels or Greinke, Votto, Lester, and Granderson in the first 3 rounds.
