After lackluster debuts with the Nationals and Reds, respectively, pitchers Gio Gonzalez and Mat Latos will both be seeking their first victory in their new uniforms this season when they square off Thursday afternoon at Nationals Park in Washington's home opener.

Gonzalez settled for a no-decision after allowing four runs on seven hits in just 3 2/3 innings of work against the Cubs on April 7. Latos didn't fare much better against the Marlins the same day, getting saddled with the loss after lasting 4 2/3 innings, also allowing four runs off seven base knocks.
Another thing working in Latos' favor is his 3-1 career record against the Nationals, including a 2-0 mark with a 1.42 ERA at Nationals Park.

This is the Nats Home Opener. It will be one of the few sell outs this season most likely. Nice day here in DC. Should be about 62 at game time and sunny. I'll be at the next two games. Good weather expected all weekend. 74 Saturday and in the 80's on Sunday.

Gio didn't look too good his first time out for the Nats. Hopefully its the same today. I did read this morning that Latos is 2-0 with 1.42 era at Nationals Ballpark. So he must like pitching there.

Why does Dusty announce to the press that a player is unavailable? Why give the other manager that information?

My guess, is that in baseball, it just doesn't make that much of a difference in any single 1 game. Its not like the oppossing manager is going to alter his starting pitcher or lineup w/ Brandon in there or not. The Red's lineup is available before game time, even if he wanted to make adjustments, and the oppossing manager is probably assuming Brandon is available to pinch hit if called upon.

Odd to have two back-to-back day games in the middle of the week.

I doubt it can really have an effect on the outcome of the game, and I guess the fact that the closer is a lefty in Marshall could effect the situation, but there could come a situation where the opposing manager knows there is no lefty down in the pen for the Reds, so he can safely send up a lefty pinch hitter to face a righty. Again, not extremely important, but I wouldn't want the opposing manager to have that advantage.

My son texted me to say the wind was blowing in today, so he's thinking it'll be a pitcher's duel.
