They probably wanted to send him back to Pensacola and he said no.

Players under a minor league contract, at least without five years of accrued MLB service, typically don't have a right to refuse an assignment to my knowledge. In fact, minor league UPCs, the contract explicitly states a player can be assigned to any Major League or Minor League club of their choosing.

There certainly can be exceptions written in to a contract, but my understanding is that is very rare for minor league contracts unless it's a player with major league experience. Once in a while veteran minor leaguers on their second or subsequent contract might be given an exception to play only at the AAA level, but that's probably rare.

There are limitations of age that each minor league club has from Class AA downward, so it might be that the Reds didn't have room under the age limits to send him to Pensacola.

I've heard it been done before, but in those cases the players just retired.

Rhinehart was still on his initial minor league contract. I guarantee there's no way he was given a right to refuse an assignment. If he were a minor league free agent... maybe. But there's no way a guy on his first contract was given a right of refusal. That's just not done for initial deals. Those initial contracts are mostly cookie-cutter, with exception of the highest of draft picks where a few extra perks might be included.

They played a video of Henry and Didi finding out about being called up on the Jumbotron in Pensacola.

Apparently Juan Perez was recently promoted to Pensacola? That's news to me.

Marlins Sign Kevin Kouzmanoff & Jordan Smith
By Mike Axisa [November 3 at 6:40pm CST]
Here are the day's minor league signings...

The Marlins also signed Jordan Smith to a minor league pact with an invite to Spring Training according to Rodriguez. Smith, 26, pitched to a 4.76 ERA with 5.7 K/9 and 2.5 BB/9 in 56 2/3 innings for the Reds' Triple-A affiliate this year. The right-hander posted a 4.94 ERA in 62 relief innings for Cincinnati from 2010-2011.
