Weeping Radish is a fun place to eat- it's on the way out. And I don't think Pea Island is too far away. Alligator River NWF also. Here are some events.
Sorry, can't help with the other questions because I've only ever stayed way down south.

I can't exactly recommend it because I've never been there, but I've been wanting to check this place out for some time.

BTW, crabbing is easy. You'll need a net with about a six foot reach and a ball of cotton twine. Use about twenty feet of line, tie a chicken wing to it (some people use raw, I always save bones after grilling) Let it sit in three feet of water for a bit, and slowly bring it in. When a crab latches on, it generally won't let go until it sees you. That's the tricky part, you have to net it.
Ask around for advice where you can do this. Not sure if a license is required in NC.

Go to Kitty Hawk Kites and get a kite walk across the street and fly kite at Jockey's Ridge State Park a great experience. Downtown Maneto is great town to walk around plenty of small local craft shops and penty of restraunts to choose from. On the sound there is a dive that serves great seafood. Maneto, Kitty hawk and surrounding area has really grown. Get out to Duck and see the wild horses you can get tours on jeeps but they book up real quick might want to book before you go if this is something that interests you. Oh and the wind blows constantly there might be a reason why a couple of brothers tested their plane design there. Have been many times with family
well, you've gotta drive down through the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, climb over the dunes to the ocean, do the lighthouses and stop at the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge... the Wright Bros. National Memorial is the iconic stop. we enjoyed the Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, and the Elizabethan Gardens there is just gorgeous..not to be missed!
