As far as I know they still haven't really set up the rules regarding a checked swing. I think it's just the ump's opinion on it. You'd think there would be an actual set rule for it. If there IS one, anybody know it?

That's what I thought.
I know "intent to swing" is one. So if you are avoiding an inside pitch and you get turned around, it isn't a swing. Other than that, it's up to the ump. Welsh even had an ump on tech talk last year, and the ump had NO GOOD EXPLANATION. It was actually kind of embarrasing I thought. He was just like, (paraphrasing) "well if it looks like you swing, then you did."
Welsh kept digging for an answer, but the ump acted like he didn't understand what Welsh wanted him to say.
