    Wednesday 4/25/2012 Minor League Updates

Indianapolis downs Louisville 5-1 this afternoon. Brett Tomko with a nice outing: 6 IP 4 H 2 R 1 BB 8 K. Dorn and Costanzo with two hits each. Soto with a hit and a run scored.

Question: How seriously should we take outings by Tomko and Francis? Shouldn't they pitch well down in AAA?

Pedro Villareal is off to a nice start this year and will be hurling for the Wahoos in a little over 30 minutes.

Blaze Ace Tony Cingrani will be on the mound tonight as Bakersfield looks to make it ten in a row.

Stalin Gerson will pitch for Dayton tonight. Game starts in about an hour.

Didn't realize until tonight that Jacksonville was one of the teams on MiLB now.

Blaze game delayed. They are now saying the Jamie Walczak will be pitching instead of Tony Cingrani. Walczak is a reliever so who knows.

Anyone else not sure whether this is the right thing to do? I'm really on the fence.

Bakersfield postponed. Everyone can come on down off the fence now.

Went to the Pensacola game tonight in Jacksonville (taking a few days of vacation in St. Augustine). Observations:

    * Henry Rodriguez is really short. Also, I saw no sign of a lackadaisical approach, as has been attached to him. He did make an error on a play in which Gregorius nearly saved him by making a very strong throw off the ricochet.

    * Villarreal was unimpressive. If I didn't know that he was a high-ranking prospect (as far as Reds starters go), I wouldn't have imagined it. I saw him hit 90 only once, and his pitches were routinely high. He was hit hard. Though it's not necessarily damning, his delivery didn't seem as smooth to me as other guys' (such as that of the Jacksonville lefty who had the Wahoos eating out of his hand for five innings before tiring).

    * LaMarre seems to know his way around center field.

    * Gregorius looks very good at SS. In addition to the ricochet play, he made a remarkable off-balance throw to the plate off a ball he caught on the run, nearly nailing a guy. He also just missed another guy with a perfect throw to the plate. And he made a very pretty backhand flip to third to get a force on a high chopper that he had to charge.

    * Drew Hayes has a sort of quick-twitch motion, and his command seems a bit off. But he was effective against the two batters he faced--although I thought he got the benefit of a generous call or two.

    * Donnie Joseph was the best-looking pitcher of the night.

    * Riggleman brought LaMarre in as a fifth infielder when Jacksonville put a runner on third with no outs in the bottom of the ninth. The winning hit went to leftish-center, but it would have ended the game regardless.

If Cingrani warmed up, don't pitch him.

    Yep.

Much better to be safe than sorry at this point.
