    Baseball's Best 3-4 Hitters

At lunch today I quickly skimmed through the current "Baseball Digest," which had an article about the best 3-4 hitter combos in baseball history. Understandably Ruth and Gehrig had several seasons that were mentioned, but I was struck by a couple of curious omissions/selections.
The article listed the 1960 season by Hank Aaron and Eddie Mathews. They were a great duo for more than a decade and both were very good in 1960....but they were clearly better in 1959 and that season was not mentioned.
    In 1960 Aaron had a .292 BA/.352 OBP/.566 SPT with 40 HR and 126 RBI;
    Mathews had a line of .277/.397/.551 39 124.
    Compare that to 1959: Aaron was .355/.401/.636 39 123 while Mathews had a line of .306/.390/.593 46 114.
The article also mentioned Carl Yastrzemski and Tonny Conigliaro of the 1970 Red Sox but made no mention of Johnny Bench and Tony Perez for any season. In 1970 Yaz hit .329/.452/.592 40 102, a line very similar to that of Perez that same season, as Doggie went .317/.401/.589 40 129.
Bench however had a much better 1970 than did Tony C. Conigliaro had a line of .266/.324/.498 36 116 while Bench went .293/.345/.587 45 148.
Anyway, what are some other dynamic duo seasons, both all time and among contemporary players?

Can you link the article? I would love to read that.

The 2004 Cardinals had an insane lineup. Not only was Pujols and Edmonds deadly but Rolen had the best year of his career.

    Pujols: .331, .415 OBP, .657 SLG, 1.072 OPS, 46 HR, 123 RBI
    Edmonds: .301, .418 OBP, .643 SL, 1.061 OPS, 42 HR, 111 RBI
    Rolen: .314, .409 OPB, .598 SLG, 1.007 OPS, 34 HR, 124 RBI

Sorry to localize it but that is by far the best 1-2 and 3 punch I have seen since watching baseball since the 1990's.

If Bautista was himself, right now it would be Joey Bats and Edwin Encarnacion

Miggy Cabrera and Prince Fielder are as devastating as any on that list. They're scheduled to be together for the next four years.

I was skimming the article at a newsstand. I do not know if it is online. The pairing of Cabrera and Fielder seemed to be the genesis of the article.

If they were truly sticking to the 3-4 hitters, I think Morgan hit third and then Bench and Perez.

Hard to top Maris/ Mantle in 61.

More recently there was Bonds/Kent in the early 00's, particularly in 01 with Aurillia 2, Bonds 3 Kent 4
    big Papi/ Ramirez.

    Re: Baseball's Best 3-4 Hitters

I'd be curious to see Vada Pinson & Frank Robinson's numbers during the small number of years they occupied the 3/4 slots; from about 1962 thru 1965 mostly.
