Votto- Reds Captain in our hearts

    http://aol.sportingnews.com/mlb/stor...t-base-spanish

"He really wants to learn and that really means a lot," says teammate Wilson Valdez, who hails from the Dominican Republic. "When some players come to the States, they don't know any English. He feels kind of sad about it. He likes to talk to (Aroldis) Chapman, but he doesn't speak English. That's one of the reasons he's learning Spanish."

    ...

Votto isn't the first North American in the Reds' family to learn Spanish. Hall of Famer Barry Larkin grew up in Cincinnati but learned the language so he could get along better with all of his teammates. And as Votto says about Larkin, "He's a good guy to emulate."
...and I thought that no Reds news would bring a smile to my face with how they have been playing recently.

Votto for captain! Displays of leadership and empathy towards teammates are often overlooked, and I am glad to see that our own JV is going out of his way to help connect to all 25 players in the clubhouse.

Great stuff. Very impressed by Votto the person. This kind of thing means a lot on a team.

Thanks for posting this article. I love that he's fluent in French and agree that knowing another language well helps when trying to learn a different one (I also speak French, not that great but I know it , and find learning Spanish words a little easier). I'm really glad Joey is going to be a Red for a long time.

"I tried to play golf, but I found out I wasn't very good." -Joey Votto on his offseason hobby search

An MLB.com reporter asked what one thing Votto couldn’t do. “I can’t skate or play hockey,” Votto said. “Well, I can skate ... but I can’t stop.”

Good thing he already speaks Canadian.

It also helps that being from Canada, Votto was already bilingual.
"This isn’t stats vs scouts - this is stats and scouts working together, building an organization that blends the best of both worlds. This is the blueprint for how a baseball organization should be run. And, whether the baseball men of the 20th century like it or not, this is where baseball is going."---Dave Cameron, U.S.S. They could give him his own concession stand, serving Canadian Beer, doughnuts and poutine!

“I don’t care,” Votto said of passing his friend and former teammate. “He’s in the past. Bye-bye, Jay.”
