The best way to beat a team that's bunkered in is to maintain possession and force them to chase the ball. Those quick passes in and back out that probe the defense and force defenders to chase may make for boring TV, but it's physically demanding and will (as it did in this case) open up space in the second half as the defense fatigues.

The one takeaway I had from the Gold Cup was that the US looked light-years better than I've ever seen on first touches. In the past, you'd see the US (at all levels) give up possession or lose opportunities for good runs because the first touch (or the pass itself) was so poor that it led to dispossession or threw off timing. In this tournament, the US was, in every match, the more polished team in terms of passing and touches. That hasn't been the case in possibly forever.

    My opinion:

    Donovan - obviously
Beasley - I was pleasantly surprised by his defense, but it is possible he would get ripped apart by european and south american talent.
Diskerud - Really enjoyed his abilities in the middle of the field and seems like a sharp passer.
    Goodson - Solid defender
Brek Shea - Like his size and strength, able to physically dominate smaller defenders. Can be inconsistent. Good player to come off the bench and play physical against tired defenders.
I like Mix a lot and the Holden injury could help him make the squad, but I don't see him playing much if at all above the guys in front of him.

I like Shea, but I don't trust him. He has amazing physical abailities and does a great job sometimes on that wing, but he makes some awful mental mistakes from time to time. I do like him as a sub though just because he is different from almost every other potential player.

I don't think you see Beasely in the starting XI, but I think you take him as a possible LB sub for sure. With a fresh set of legs I would trust him back there.

He's quietly had a very good career for the MNT.

I don't think so either, but so far no one has stepped up to take the job from him.

You could move one of the middle guys (Gonzalez, Besler, Goodsen, Boca) out wide, but I don't love that.

There are guys like Parkhurst, Cameron and Evans, but I think I like Beasley more.

I think the most likely option is dropping Fabian Johnson back which gives the midfield more options and gets Johnson on the field.

Holden with a torn right ACL. Poor guy, can't catch a break.

Got an email that I didn't get US v. Mex tix through the random draw, followed by an email that I could still get them by buying a Crew season ticket package. Somehow I get the feeling there might be some season ticket orders from south of the border.

This is really funny. Could go in the NFL thread, but here too.

My goodness. What a game from Jozy. Wish the World Cup was THIS summer.

Amazing game for Jozy. He did all the work on EJ's goal as well.

What a performance. Don't underestimate Bradley's presence in the midfield. This team really has come together. I do worry about the defense, though.

I worry about the defensive depth and fullbacks. But Besler, Gonzalez, and Goodson have all been great in the middle. Lets hope Chandler and a few others step up on the outside.
