Great guitar picker Doc Watson dies

Got a CNN news break that the great Doc Watson died today at the age of 89. He and Earl are probably already picking away.

First time I heard many of these bluegrass players was on the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band compilation "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" - a fine, fine collection.

Nice write up in the Times:

Out of all the celebrity deaths to happen this year, this one has easily been the one to hit me the most. Doc Watson is about as important of an influence as they come, and it's sad to see him go. RIP Doc.

Watson's death is like losing a founding father of the old time and bluegrass revival. Very sad to see him pass.

Sad news. I had just seen Doc perform in late April at Merlefest, the music festival he started in North Carolina to honor his late son 25 years ago.
"In our sundown perambulations of late, through the outer parts of Brooklyn, we have observed several parties of youngsters playing 'base', a certain game of ball. Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our close rooms, the game of ball is glorious"

As many have said, he's one of the true greats.

They say these things happen in 3s and in a very short span, we've seen the passing of 3 music icons: Donna Summer, Robin Gibb, and now Doc Watson.

    And Earl Scruggs too.
