Friday, June 1, 2012, Minor League Updates

    Louisville Bats vs. Durham Bulls
Pedro Villarreal will make his fifth start for the Bats. Between Louisville and Pensacola, he is 3-3 with a 3.62 ERA and WHIP of 1.089. His most impressive stat is probably his 1.2 BB/9IP. Going against him is the 28-year-old Lance Pendleton.

Pensacola Blue Wahoos @ Jackson Generals - Game 1
Dan Corcino was supposed to pitch in the rain-out yesterday, but he'll start game one of the double-header instead. He's going against Brandon Maurer, who turns 22 next month.

Pensacola Blue Wahoos @ Jackson Generals - Game 2
This is a guess on my part, but I believe Tim Crabbe is starting the second game. It would be his usual four-day rest, and he didn't get out of the third inning in his last appearance, so I think it's a fairly safe bet. I'm guessing the Generals will turn to one of the top prospects in baseball, Taijuan Walker.

Bakersfield Blaze @ San Jose Giants
The groundball machine known as Sharky Rogers is opposing Jack Snodgrass, the big lefty from Bowling Green, Kentucky. Rogers is tied for the organizational lead in career fielding percentage as he has never made an error as a professional. I'll pull my tongue out of my cheek now and mention that he has shown excellent control this year. In fact, four members of the bullpen have issued more walks than Rogers despite facing significantly less batters.

Dayton Dragons vs. South Bend Silver Hawks
It's Stalin Gerson versus Jesse Darrah in one of the least-exciting match-ups I've seen all day. Fresh of their walk-off win from last night, the Dragons will try to improve on their 21-33 record. Interestingly, Darrah had a 10.3 K/9IP for Missoula last year, but this year it has dipped to just 4.4 K/9IP.

The Bats are down 3-1 in the 8th. I must've jinxed Villarreal by mentioning his excellent control because he issued 4 walks in 5.2 IP. Nick Christiani and Josh Judy have combined for 2.1 innings of shutout relief thus far. The Bats are threatening at the moment following a Joey Gathright double.

The second game in Jackson is scoreless after four. Mark Serrano got the start, and Stephen Hunt has the Wahoos' only hit, a single.

After seven, the Dragons are struggling, but I guess we're used to that. It was 4-3 after the 5th, but they now trail 9-3 in the 8th. Junior Arias has a home run (2) and walk in the same game, which might be the only time he ever does that as a Dragon. Between Jimmy Moran and Ryan Kemp, the bullpen has given up five runs in two innings. Cole Green is now in to hopefully stop the bleeding.

Useless trivia time: Mark Serrano is currently the Reds' 7th-oldest pitcher to have not played in MLB. Mike Griffin currently has the honor of being oldest. The youngest is Aroldis Chapman.

In Dayton, it looks like no one explained to Cole Green what "stop the bleeding" means. To be fair, bad defense and some unlucky breaks led to him giving up two unearned runs to make it 11-3 in the bottom of the 8th.

The Bats are down to their last out with Felix Perez up. A grand slam would win it, but the bases are empty.

Carlos Contreras will pitch the 9th for the Dragons. They're only down by eight, so this might be considered a moral victory for them.

Perez walked in a 9-pitch at-bat, but Corky Miller grounded out to the pitcher to end it. For all you boxers out there . . .

Of course on the day I poke fun of Jesse Darrah's K/9IP, he manages to strike out 11 Dragons over 6 innings. I need to stop being so observant.

Pensacola and Jackson are still scoreless in the 7th inning of the 2nd game. Donnie "Promote Me to Louisville" Joseph pitched a scoreless 6th with 2 strikeouts. He's sticking around for a 2nd inning of work.

Billy Hamilton led off the Bakersfield game with a single, stole second (58), advanced to 3rd on a wild pitch, and scored on a ground out by Bryson Smith. 1-0 Blaze in the 2nd inning.
