Mid-80's fastball with plus command of four below average pitches.

Filler, unless he fills out or finds five mph on his fastball. LH, so he may find value as a LOOGY.

goodness, I wonder how often his last name got made fun while growing up. So many places to go, but I'll bite my tounge.

Wow, really nice pick here if the Reds can sign him. Perfect Game loves him:

    Report

Jose Ortiz is a 2012 C with a 5-11 205 lb. frame from Comerio, PR who attends Juana Colon School. Thick mature build, very good strength. Right handed hitter, very aggressive swing approach, rotational swing with lift and power, looks to pull, commits early and attacks, ball jumps hard when centered, game home run, crushes mistakes. Very good arm strength behind the plate, quick compact arm stroke, 1.86 best pop time, active feet, will have to work on hands/receiving skills. Has the tools to keep improving. Good student.

    PG Grade: 9.5 [Grading Scale]
They say he's committed to a college, but I can't find where.

    Really nice gamble here.

Ortiz looks like a prototypical catcher. Worst case scenario, if the Reds don't have the cash for Ortiz, they can prevent other teams from trying to sign him.

Perfect Game says his fastball tops out at 91 mph, with an occasionaly effective change. Has a college commitment to Alabama. Plays both 3B and has tools enough to try it if pitching doesn't work out. Slow, slower, and slowest. 9.5 grade out of ten, indicating top division of college (makes sense, as 'Bama has him signed) and top ten round draftee talent.

With the new rules, I can't think most teams will be able to sign lower-round HS picks away from college commitments. Makes me wonder why the Reds are spending time drafting such players like Stephens.

Nice length, needs to add weight. One of Top 100 Juco players, according to Perfect Game. Bullpen arm at the California two-year program. Only 9.1 IP with low K rate. Hit .137 in the OF.

    Odd, to say the least.

Eh, a projectable frame or one pitch with a chance for major upside = pop 'em at this stage of the draft.

From Perfect Game's assessment of Canadian draftees:

PROSPECT ON THE RISE: Brock Dykxhoorn, rhp, St. Anne’s Catholic HS, Clinton, Ontario. An ex-hockey player from a small Ontario town, Dykxhoorn was slow to emerge as a top prospect for this year’s draft, but has made an instant impression with his huge 6-foot-8, 225-pound frame alone. Though he doesn't currently throw particularly hard, and his secondary stuff and command are still at a very raw stage, he made obvious gains in his development this spring and actually pitched surprisingly well for Canada’s junior-national team against pro and international competition, and for the B.C.-based Langley Blaze on a trip to Arizona, where he pitched in front of some 150 scouts in an outing against a team of top prospects from the Dominican Republic.
Not particularly hard is certainly true-- the fastest they've got him clocked is 78 mph.

    Major project.

One of the most difficult thing in scouting is trying to predict who is willing sign. The Reds might know something, but on the other hand, this could insurance for if they can't come to terms with some of their earlier draft picks since it would potentially draw from the same pool.
