Attended 1976 World Series in my Mother's Womb. Attended 1990 World Series Game 2 as a 13 year old. Want to take my son to a a World Series Game in Cincinnati in my lifetime.
The Astros owner was quoted, "we did it in such a way it allows us to pick up some other players we really wanted and be able to stretch a little here and there." Is there something in the CBA that allows additional money to be expended that sweetens the pot but doesn't count against the purse? I know major league deals are out (alleluia), but can they offer a multiyear contract?

Supposedly signing for $5M, which is $2.2M lower than the slot. That leaves them with a ton of extra money to spend on the rest of their draft.
Teams can get in a lot of trouble for trying to circumvent the slot system. It has been suggested that there might be loopholes (for example, overpaying a family member for a useless role in the organization and having said family relay the money to the player), but MLB feels like they have it all shored up. If a team is caught, there could be some "harsh" penalties. There has even been some talk of teams looking for ways to break federal laws. I don't have a subscription, but in case you know someone who does, this might be a helpful article: http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/blog?...-loopholes-mlb

The way the new CBA works, it serves teams better to sign their later picks first so that first round picks expecting over-slot money don't try to extort the team for extra money by saying, "If you don't sign me, your draft pool goes down, and then you won't be able to sign those other guys you wanted." That way, it gives a team leverage to say, "Listen, we can't afford to sign you for more than $________. If you want more that, you're going to have to wait at least a year."

Royals ink first-round pick Zimmer
By Paul Casella / MLB.com | 06/07/12 4:55 PM ET
The Royals have signed first-round pick Kyle Zimmer, the fifth overall selection in Monday's First-Year Player Draft. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The thing is, $5.5M is still a lot of money. Perhaps this hard slot system will serve it's purpose.

Correa was taken earlier than expected and signed below slot for a reason. Several guys fell big time. The rounds 6-10 were an absolute joke in terms of the players who wound up being selected so teams could sign guys for well under slot and try to sign guys who fell for signability reasons who they then drafted later.
Also, avoiding the swear filter is frowned upon. You easily could have just said jerk instead of using some dollar signs.
