    2011 Draft Update

    Since a lot of people get excited about the draft, then forget about them the following year, I thought I'd give a "one year since" update. I mostly did it for myself, but you got lucky enough for me to share.

    To make it shorter, I took out where they are from and school, but added what level they got drafted from. My info on them is shorter than a tweet and strictly meant as a super short update.

    HS = High School
    4Y = Four year college (like Rice)
    JC = Junior College

    1 27 Robert Stephenson HS-RHP In extended spring, expected to go to Billings in 2 weeks
    2 84 Gabriel Rosa HS-OF Extended Spring, OPS'd .720 in 28 g at AZ as 17 yo last year
    3 114 Tony Cingrani 4Y - LHP Already dominated A+, doing it now in AA. 12.2 IP, 14 K, 4 BB, 2 runs in 2 starts.
    4 145 Kyle McMyne 4Y - RHP Good reliever at A-, early struggles as he was promoted to A+
    5 175 Ryan Wright 4YC - 2B Doing well in A-, .305/.353/.423, 11 SB, 1 CS

    10 325 Brooks Pinckard 4Y - RHP Sporting a 9.64 ERA in A+ pen, 18.2 ip
    11 355 Vaughn Covington HS - RHP He's Canadian, and in Extended
    12 385 Joe Serrano HS - SS Unsigned; .300 avg in limited time at Arkansas. Very light hitter, taken time to adjust to better comp

    14 445 Leo Kemp 4Y - RHP Got nothing on him, Extended? Anyone?

    16 505 Conor Costello HS - OF Unsigned

    18 565 James Moran 4Y - RHP Struggling in A- pen, 6.66 ERA in 25 ip

    Re: 2011 Draft Update

    Leo Kemp seems to be going by Ryan Kemp. Is in low A where he is posting a 2.78 ERA and 3 saves in 32 IP over 22 relief appearances.

    Thanks for doing this--I always enjoy keeping track of these sort of things. Here's a couple notes:

    Wrenn's father is a scout for the Diamondbacks who is known for his speed and defense at shortstop. After being drafted by the Red for the second time, he signed last July and is expected to make his debut this year. He's in EST.

    Yes, he signed, but he was also the first player from the draft to be cut by the Reds.

    Yes, he signed an above-slot deal ($300,000). Still just 18, he's in EST.

    Yesterday I couldn't find anything on what this kid did this season, but finally found him. He pitched for the College of Charleston this year, but he's shown as "Will Dorton" on their site. He had some "lingering arm issues," he was redshirted this season. He's going to play in a college league this summer.

    I'm going to give myself a star for sleuthing this one out. I thought maybe he'd gone into the witness protection program.

    Re: 2011 Draft Update

    This is an interesting Q&A with some college coaches about players who didn't sign, instead coming to college. The College of Charleston coach is one of those interviewed. Besides Dorton, 17th round pick Morgan Phillips also turned down "six figures" from the Reds and went to C of C for school. Not Reds related, but they comment on one of their players coming back after being drafted in '11 (49th round). He moved up to the 8th round this year.
