Tri-State Online (Cincinnati's Old Freenet Site)

I've been thinking today about my first forays onto the internet and Cincinnati's place in the Freenet world, Tri-State Online. It was hosted at U.C. with a tso.uc.edu domain address for the emails. It was funded, as I remember, by Cincinnati Bell.

It was originally text base, although I can't remember if it ever made the jump to what the internet looks like today. There were various forums and discussion was often lively, something we're used to here.

It shut down on June 30, 1999 just prior to Cincinnati Bell beginning their first Zoomtown service. The rest is, as they say, history.

So anyone else around here an alum of TSO?

Don't remember that, but I had a VAX account at UC in 1985.

Fastball.com an Internet company controlled by Cox media....

A company that learned that it was going to be expensive in the online world

Yes, I had memberships on several around the country and one in Germany. It was such a crazy new world back then.

I found out today that there is a Facebook group page for folks who used to be on Tri-State Online. It's a closed group, so you have to ask to join.

I worked for DEC from 1983-1995. VAXen were my life for quite a while.

Haven't thought about them for a while now. Times change.

I was on TSO! I think I was in maybe 9th or 10th grade at the time...I think my initial user name was usr8934...I can't believe I remember that.

I also used the Youngstown State telnet and their guitar boards. But the sports discussions all took place on TSO.

Kind of related but does anyone in the Cincy area remember ON TV in the late 70's/early 80's?My friend's dad had On Plus... You could still make out some of the action even with the scrambled line going down the screen
