One of the craziest stories to me about old-timey living is how Calvin Coolidge's son played tennis without his socks on, got a blister, it got infected, and he died from it. From not wearing socks with his shoes, one time.

Indeed. I believe a big part of the increase in cancer deaths is the decrease in other causes (and the resulting longer lifespan). The longer we live the more likely it is we will develop cancer. Take a look at this life expectancy chart; mind blowing.
