    Pythagoras Smilin' 2012

Crazy old Pythagoras and his beard! Let's check him out in the Central so far:

    Code:

I would be more concerned with the Cardinals than the Pirates.

It is satisfying to see the Cubs simultaneously bad and underperforming!

Pythagoras can't take into account injuries to Berkman and Garcia. That is what is going to hurt STL.

Don't forget about Pythagoras' cousin, BABIP. Cards are sporting a .321 BABIP (best in baseball) and a 14.6% HR/FB ratio. There hasn't been a team BABIP that high over the course of the season since 2007; it's maxed out at .311 the last few years. And there hasn't been a HR/FB like that over the course of the seaosn since the 2005 Reds. In other words, the Cards aren't likely going to keep scoring 5 runs a game.

Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

When do we start worrying about the Brewers? Injuries and all, they concern me.

Their pitchers have actually been pretty decent -- 2nd highest K/9 in baseball. But their defense has been very poor.

Their defense is horrendous, just a mess

So, I'll revise it "run prevention unit." I'm on record that the Brewers somewhat remind me of the plodding 2000s Reds, except for having some legit MLB pitchers.

Watching the Brewers play defense reminds me of how miserable I was, as a Reds fan, for the majority of the last decade.

Pythagoras also doesn't take into account how putrid the Cardinals bullpen has been. That, in my opinion, has been the biggest issue. I love what Lance Lynn is doing but his absense from the bullpen is clearly noticable.

The Pirates are now +32. Less than 2 weeks ago, they were in the negatives. What an amazing turnaround.

The Reds are +40 before the game started today. That could potentially go up, we'll see.

I think it's fair to say the Pirates are on par with the Reds at this point. The Cards are a remarkable +69! That's 2nd best in baseball behind the Rangers (who are +78).

The Cardinals were +34 when the season was twelve games old. Given the choice between "juggernaut who's been a bit unlucky of late" and "just happened to have their best two-week stretch of the season in the first two weeks," I'm leaning toward/hoping for the latter.

Which says to me they've been on a run offensively that there's absolutely no way they can continue.

Or perhaps they're peaking at the right time. Pirates had a very difficult April. Much tougher than St. Louis or Cincinnati did.

I just don't see the depth in pitching for them to sustain this. (or hitting for that matter)

    And, they're the Pirates.
