    Birthdays: 7/11

    No Reds today....

    Others:

Billy Ashley (42) -Dodger outfielder who hit them very far and very seldom...Later made a name for himself by co-starring in a reality TV show called "Househusbands Of Bevery Hills", which somehow I missed...

Ed Ott (61) -Believed to have the shortest name in baseball history- 5 letters total. He had a wrestling background, and he put it to good use in several notable baseball brawls, including a body slam that separated Felix Millan's shoulder and a choke hold that turned Rob Dibble's face a lovely shade of blue.

Bob Allison -Senators/Twins slugger. On July 18, 1963 he and Harmon Killebrew hit grand slams in the same inning...In 1964, he was one of four consecutive Twins hiters who pulled off back-to-back-to-back-to-back homers.

Milt Stock -Longtime second baseman who set a record by gettting four hits in a game for four games in a row (Rafael Furcal later had three in a row).

Jimmy Slagle -Center fielder on the marvelous Cub teams of 1906-08 (the phrase "marvelous Cub team" doesn't seem natural, does it?)...Anyway, Slagle was the first player to steal home in a World Series game.

Pop Shriver -Old-time catcher known less for his on-field exploits than for being the first player to catch a ball dropped from the Washington Monument (a favorite stunt of the time).
"In baseball, you don't know nothin'"...Yogi Berra

...and, in case you are wondering, Ed is NOT related to Mel Ott.
