Best K/9 ratio in MLB history? (Cuban Missile)

Chapman now has 79 strikeouts in 42.1 IP this season. If that pace continues, I have to think that would be an all-time MLB record. What is the current record? Perhaps the only thing that would prevent El Missile from getting the record is lack of innings pitched. (Might need a certain amount of IPs to qualify for the record. Other than that, have to think he's on pace for the best K/9 ratio of all time.)

According to Baseball-Reference.com, the highest K/9 IP w/ a minimum of 80 IP is Eric Gagne from 2003 at 14.98.

    Chapman's at almost 17. Insanity!

Craig Kimbrell is also higher than that with a 15.94. Of course, is either guy going to throw 80 innings? Kimbrell in his first year had a 17.42 rate in 20.1 innings. Ernesto Friera is at 14.92 this season as well.

    Eh. Ryan Wagner had a 16.79 K/9 in 2003.

It was his last season in college. That was a joke.

Missed that part of it because also spent time in both the minors and Majors that year.

If 80 IP is the cutoff, is this a record he could get pitching say, only 75 IP, but they just add 5 imaginary innings to his stats with 0 strikeouts for those innings?

I just kind of randomly went with 80 because that seems to be a decent milestone for relievers. Not sure what the official standard would be.

FWIW, ESPN.com has Chapman projected to finish the year with 77 1/3 innings pitched based on his usage so far - which would result in 145 Ks.

Maybe go with 100 strike outs instead?
Sabermetrics can be boiled down to this simple truism: A batter's goal is to extend the inning. Extend enough innings and you're going to score runs. Extend more innings than your opponent and you're going to score more runs than him.

I loved seeing Chapman do all those stretching exercises. Part of the reason pitchers lose velocity when they get older is that they can no longer get the necessary leverage and otrque needed to throw the ball that hard. They get stiff and the leg they land with lands in a slightly differing position, thus causing thier arm (and the rest of their body) to have to catch up.

Kenley Jansen had a 16.7 k/9 rate in 50 some innings last season didn't he? I'll have to look it up - looked it up 16.1 3 year career to date 122ip 201 ko 14.83 career rate
