Awful is a little strong. 2.70 and a 1.31 WHIP isn't an awful pitcher. His K/BB this year is subpar, yes, but it's a little strong.

Leaving him in against the lefty was a mistake. Reds could still be tied or ahead 2-1 if the right move was made.

Heisey doesn't get a lot of credit for that last at bat, either.

Dodgers Cardinals heading to the 10th tied 2-2.

And I've been complaining all year. He was likely to start failing.

I don't know why Dusty would pinch-hit Phillips, a righty, for Marshall, a lefty, in this situation..

Now compare his metrics (all of them, not the cherry picked ones) to all relievers in the league.

Brandon walks. 2 on, one out.

No missed bats, and poor control. Completely BABIP dependent, and has been lucky so far.

Great AB by Phillips. He walks. Huge AB here for Cozart.

He is an awful relief pitcher. His ERA means nada. One of the worst relief pitcher in baseball. Why is this so hard for everyone to understand?

I don't think ERA and WHIP is cherry picking. Pretty basic stats. I said his K/BB rates aren't good this year.

Ondrusek is ok. He started the year well. He seems to wear down easily.

He's good enough to pitch a clean inning against the Astros. He didn't, he pitched poorly, and was left in too long.

Well, awful in the sense that he is likely replacement level. There are plenty of replacement level guys that have success for periods. Usually if they are matched correctly.

Right now, Ondrusek is not being matched correctly. The starters are giving innings, they should feel free to use him as a ROOGY in some high leverage situations. But yes, I would characterize him as being quite poor because I dont believe in ERA and WHIP to evaluate relief pitchers, but I get your point.

And those specific BABIP, of course, were a GABP home run to right center and a ball hit at Mach 3 that happened to intersect the apex of Rolen's vertical leap.
