Span plus Stubbs, instead of Span vs Stubbs?

Everyone seems to think if we trade for Denard Span, that he will replace Stubbs in CF and we would get rid of stubbs or something.

A lot of people on here also think Stubbs could be a solid player if he just batted 7th or something instead of 1 or 2.

What if we trade for Span and put him number 1 in the lineup almost every game. Keep Cozart at 2 I guess.

Have Stubbs platoon with Ludwick. Now I dont mean have Stubbs play LF, obviously when Stubbs plays he would be in CF. So when Ludwick starts Span plays CF and when Stubbs starts Span plays LF.

Let Stubbs do what he does best which is hit for some power, have speed to play great D, and take pressure off him by batting him 7th.

It also solves your outfield issue for next year but just going with Span (LF), Stubbs (CF) and Bruce (RF).

Lineup for most of this year and the future....

    1. Span LF
    2. Cozart SS
    3. Votto 1B
    4. Phillips 2B
    5. Bruce RF
    6. Frazier 3B
    7. Stubbs CF
    8. Hanoraco

For this year, whne Ludwick starts, you put him 6th and Frazier 7th.

All those guys are signed for like at least 2-3 years too right?

Everyone thinks its Span vs Stubbs, but I think it very well could be Span AND Stubbs.

Stubbs will play CF every day no matter who we have or obtain until proven otherwise.

He's Drew Gehrig and he's our every day CF for the foreseeable future.

People seem to always forget contracts when it comes to trades.

I wouldn't start Stubbs over Heisey in left...ever.

That's funny: I keep saying the same thing about Jay Mantle too.

He makes 11+ million next two years. Roles departure is eating up raises with other guys. Some key guys going to arbitration. His contract is very much an issue.

I'm pretty sure Mantle is leading off for the Angels.

Re: Span plus Stubbs, instead of Span vs Stubbs?

I don't post much, but am happy to share my two cents on this thread - because I was thinking the same thing.

I think if the Reds add Span, Stubbs will move to left, maybe move down in the order to No. 7 and the Reds improve the team.

I don't quite understand the distaste for Span. He would be a true leadoff hitter, he plays his ass off and would be a big part of this team for the next several years.

Last year at this time, there was quite a bit of distaste on this board with Michael Bourne rumors started popping up. All told, he would have been a terrific addition last July. Span can be that kind of addition this year.

there is like a 100% chance this does not happen.

the way ludwick is hitting he will stay put and he should.

I don't see how Stubbs staying in the lineup would help the team improve at all. If the Reds pick up Span or another center fielder, Stubbs isn't one of the 3 best outfielders by a large margin. Stubbs just isn't very good.

Re: Span plus Stubbs, instead of Span vs Stubbs?

Span would essentially take Stubb's spot and Stubbs would take Heiseys spot.

Vs Lefites you start Stubbs in CF Ludwick in LF.
Vs Righties you start Ludwick in LF Span in CF 2/3 times
Vs Righties you start Stubbs in CF and Span in LF 1/3 times.

So if a lefty starts every 4th day (not sure if thats true or not) Span starts 3 of 4, Stubbs starts 2/4 and Ludwick starts 3/4.

Stubbs in the 7 hole would be a lot better then Stubbs in the 2 hole. Not just statistically, but also as how much it hurts the team because its a lot bigger deal to have a 2 hole hitter hitting .230 then a 7 hole hitter hitting .230
