    Bailey and Tipping Pitches

    http://www.daytondailynews.com/blogs...ds/index.html/

Interesting story here. Apparently, the Cardinals and the Dodgers (and who knows who else) knew when Bailey was going to throw certain pitches. And it was Schumaker who told him.

Bailey said that when Skip Schumaker showed up with the Reds this spring he told Bailey that when Schumaker was with the Dodgers and the Cardinals that they knew when Bailey was going to throw certain breaking pitches.

“I’ve done it in the past and I get somebody in the dugout to watch me to make sure I’m not,” said Bailey. “I’ve been known to do it in the past and it is something I have to think about before each game. It is something I’m cognizant about.”

He must tip pitches each year in April/May, and then doesn't the rest of each year.

So what can a pitcher typically do that will tip off his pitches?

I know one is nodding twice to the catcher (first nod indicates fastball, second indicates location). What others are there?

Position of the glove is probably the biggest. Or rather, seeing a pitcher messing with his glove in order to change his grip. Some guys will take different "rocker steps" for different pitches from the windup. Several years ago someone was sticking their tongue out every time they threw a breaking ball.

The glove thing is the big one though, especially given that Bailey throws quite a few splitters.

There are a lot of ways a pitcher tips his pitches.

Didn't Bailey beat Kershaw last year on ESPN on Sunday Night? Must not have been tipping them to Skip too bad.
