I would certainly be willing to give him a shot. We could use a lefty off the bench with some pop.

The question is who does he replace? Cairo? If so, who is your 2nd backup infielder? Frazier? He starts so much with Rolen hurting.....Wouldn't bother me, but I would bet the Reds don't do it.

I'd be up for it. He certainly can't be worse than Cairo, and he gives you more versatility than Overbay.

That's an amazing statement."

I don't think the Reds would do it, because they'd have to jettison Cairo. But who's the better backup 1B, Cairo or Branyan? Not even a question IMO.

How does he provide more versatility? He's 36, and he's played a total of three innings at a position other than 1B in the last four years.

I've always liked Branyan. He certainly has mashed in AAA this year. Last year he was BABIP unlucky in the bigs. I like him as a backup firstbaseman more than Cairo, but I'd still rather have Overbay.

True, but that's still more versatility than Overbay who has only ever played 1B and DH'ed in his entire career. Branyan has played 3B, LF, and RF in his career.

I was in favor of acquiring Branyan months ago, and my mind hasn't changed. That stated, I'd prefer someone like Kotsay, as unlikely as that may be.
