    Reds Payroll

Is it crazy to think that the Reds currently have a top 10 payroll in all of Baseball for next year?

    http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012/0...mmitments.html

Obviously with the exception of Ludwick and maybe a bench player or two, the Reds already have all of their players locked up for next year, so I'd expect them to drop a bit on the list after the offseason (I could see teams like the Nats, Cubs, and Red Sox all surpassing them). But still, who would've thought?

They're top 10 in commitments, but they consistently hover at or around league average when it's all said and done. Even with a jump next year, expect their payroll to be topped by Washington, Mets, Milwaukee, Boston, Cubs, and Atlanta by Opening Day. That would put Cincinnati at 16th, which seems about right.

Yea, we will drop from 10th, but it shows that Bob C is putting his money where his mouth is.. I really apprecate the commitment he has shown.
Thank you Walt and Bob for going for it in 2010-2014!

I actually see Castellini allowing Walt to be active again this offseason either via trade or FA route. I see Ludwick returning to a two year extension, and with (Rolen, Cairo, Valdez, Bray, and Massett's) contracts gone, and Arroyo in his final year, it allows Walt to be creative either locking up our own (Latos,Chapman,Cueto) or getting that 1-2 pieces we needed this year, leadoff hitter and lefty bench bat or even trading for a solid #1 catcher...ahem(Carlos Santana).

Well Cueto and Chapman both have '15 options, Latos is going to arbitration for the first time, and Hanigan/Mes will be behind the plate again. Center field and leadoff are the most pressing needs to me, but they're not going to have much money to work with.

    Re: Reds Payroll

I think the Reds have done an excellent job of locking guys up in long term deals. This does a couple of things as it allows them payroll stability and a way to project expenses over the next few years. They really have no big name players coming up for renewal during the next two years. Votto top 5 player in BB is locked up until he retires. Brandon will retire with the Reds, Cueto is here 3 more years, Chapman the same. Arroyo drops off the books next year, but he's on the wrong side of 30 at this point. Luckwick is the only guy who is up for renewal and with the season he's having he'll get a nice contract out of it... Maybe 3 years for $20???

But if you look at LA and the Phillies...Yikes...

I think Masset is due $3.1M in 2013. Unfortunately.

    Yeah, Masset won't be moved.

    FA:
    Rolen
    Madson
    Cairo

    Option:
Ludwick (will get at least $5 million)

    Non-tender candidates:
    Valdez
    Redmond
    Paul
    Valaika
    Bray
Simon (Aribration eligible, probably not "worth" the money/can be easily replaced)

Other than that, all others should return.

Stubbs is a wildcard next year, Bray is gone.

PayFlex is definitely an issue in 2013

I think we're going to very much regret the 2016 and beyond portion of DatDude's deal

Hopefully a massive new local TV deal in 2014 saves the day

I don't think Stubbs will be non-tendered, but I do think there is a good chance he gets traded and we sign Juan Pierre to a one-year deal until Hamilton is ready to take over center.

Yeah not non-tendered, but a candidate to be moved due to expense.

Homer could be a trade wildcard as well. Starting to get expensive and FA after 2014.

Yeah. I totally agree. I'd guess that one of Bailey or Leake won't be a Red in 2014, if not next year.

    Re: Reds Payroll

It really depends if Chapman goes into the rotation.

If they don't put him in the rotation next year, I would keep both Bailey and Leake because I don't really like the free agent options that would be economical for the Reds.

If the do convert him back, then you have to deal Bailey or Leake to make room for Aroldis. That's the only reason I'd trade one of them because I don't think they have anyone ready to step in come April and like I said, I don't like the available free agents.
