The Reds fans at Wrigley tonight howling was hilarious. The way our park used to be full of rowdy, drunk Cubs fans a few years ago, it's nice to see Wrigley almost empty, with a lot of howling Reds fans.

Especially if Broxton becomes the closer. His song is Ozzy's "Bark at the Moon"

I still miss Trevor Hoffman coming in to "Hell's Bells"... that's a closer entrance if I've ever seen one

Glad someone gave the Cubs a taste of their own medicine. I can remember going to a game a few years back and they had just as many fans as us in the ball park, so it seemed.

I think Dusty was even grinning about it in the dugout during the 9th inning.

It brought a huge smile to my face last night when all you could hear in Wrigley was the howling of Reds fans. I loved it.

I've been following the conversation about this over at the Old Red Guard section, not realizing this board's category structure and that there are two separate tiers for posting. I've been waiting to comment on it, but there was an issue with not being able to register, so I only just now was able to sign up.

Anyway, I was watching the original game where this first started happening on TV, on FOX Sports Ohio; the one that went 14 innings.

I find the idea mildly amusing on the whole - seems like reasonably good fun. On the TV broadcasts, they'd been trying to come up with a name for it by polling, but I"m not sure if they ever came to any solid decision.

As for a song, may I suggest "Barking at the Moon" from Disney's Bolt?

My concern is not so much that _I_ find it annoying and distracting, which I do, but that maybe the Reds players, especially the hitters, do too. They're trying to do one of the hardest things in sports to do -hit - and now they have this howling at totally unpredictable intervals overhead to try to ignore as they focus on the pitch? I don't see how it can help. It may bother pitchers too. I find it unnerving. I just wonder if any players have the same reaction to it. And to think that it could only bother the opposition is stupid. It's a new sound for all players to experience. I hope it ends, but announcers have given it too much praise, especially Thom Brennaman, and that's all it takes for some people to keep doing it. I just hope they actually enjoy making the sound and aren't doing it just to continue having it be mentioned on broadcasts or in the papers.

Glad to see this topic hit the board as I've been wondering just what in god's name that whole howlin' thing was.....been going on for a couple weeks now and I must admit it had me scratching my head. So, basically, it's just a bunch of drunks amusing themselves? A little disappointing.

It's kind of annoying just over the TV, so I can only imagine how vexing it must be to the people nearby, especially the gray-haired set. I'm surprised fights haven't broken out.
