If the Reds are up after Game 3 they will use Homer in Game 4.

If the Reds are down after Game 3 they will use Cueto in Game 4.

Sheldon now has a formal article.

ST. LOUIS -- The Reds don't yet have an opponent for the National League Division Series, but they have a rotation set.

Not surprising is that Johnny Cueto will start Game 1, followed by Bronson Arroyo in Game 2 and Mat Latos in Game 3.

"We've been planning this for a while. It didn't take a genius to see how we planned it," Baker said on Tuesday. "What you see is what it is right now."

It appears that Homer Bailey, who threw a no-hitter vs. the Pirates on Friday, might not get a NLDS start. Baker was asked if he would use a fourth starter, if needed.

So, what would be a good argument for not starting Bailey in a road game?

The same back to back LH in the lineup BS is being used to put Arroyo 2nd......which is breaking up fastball pitchers. Whatever. You have Latos or Bailey who would be better pitching in SF. Does not matter if you can't score runs anyways.

Well Arroyo does have a 0.01 point ERA advantage.... so there is that.

You win the NLDS FIRST...don't plan starters for the NLCS..it will take care of itself. The other teams are in the same position as we are concerning starting pitching.

I don't understand Dusty. Homer should be pitching game #2...wow..

If we are the #1 seed which is still a very good possibility...Arroyo could be starting game #2 in Bush stadium...no thanks

Homer was ruled out the minute they set the rotation for the end of the year. There was no way he was going to pitch the last game of the season and then pitch game two on three days rest. It just wasn't going to happen, so while I hoped for it like you did, I don't know why you're surprised by this.

And I was starting to be alright with having Dusty back next year. Glad this brought me back to my senses (but for heavens sake, no Bobby V!). For one thing, I'm not sure Homer can get warmed up in enough time to relieve (maybe to start an inning). I would think Arroyo would be better out of the pen.

I think if Bailey pitched his no hitter earlier in the year, it wouldn't be as big of a deal. He pitched a heck of a game, but people forget that Arroyo took a no-hitter into the 8th inning in June against a much better hitting Milwaukee team. I'm not sure what's greater, taking a no hitter into the 8th inning against the Brewers or Homer Bailey getting 5 more outs against an anemic Pirates ballclub. I understand the premise of starting Bailey on the road, but I don't think Arroyo is a bad choice either. It's nice having pitching depth.

Re: Dusty hints at playoff rotation... 3 man rotation, No Bailey

I have no problem with Arroyo getting in ahead of Homer.

However, if they plan on pitching Homer in the 1st round, the place to start him in on the road (read: Game 1 or 2). This is frustrating, unless it's the plan to only use 3 starters.

Even so, having Arroyo ahead of Latos is confusing as well. As someone pointed out, that means that, assuming a 3-man rotation, that Cueto and Bronson pitch twice, Latos once. Grrrrr.

Do you think Dusty even knows that Homer is 9-2 on the road with a 2.41 era?

    Did you consider Earth?

Do you have any data that can verify whether having a soft-tosser between hard-tossers doesn't makes a difference? And if so, how big of a difference?

Do you have any data that states whether playoff experience doesn't make a positive difference in postseason performance?

Is it possible that there factors you're forgetting? For example, the starting pitchers will be on much shorter leashes, so maybe that ties into it. Latos has never pitched in the postseason, so maybe they're worried about keeping his arm fresh. Latos is heading into arbitration, and that could somehow tie into it. Maybe it relates to which catchers they're putting on the roster. Who knows?

I'm with you. I like Arroyo. I think he's been a good pitcher for Cincinnati and has had a solid year. But is he the 2nd best pitcher the Reds can throw out in the playoffs? I don't buy this nonsense that you have to mix it up with a junkball pitcher in between in the playoffs! You put out our best pitchers, period. Arroyo simply is not the 2nd best pitcher the Reds have.

If the Reds end up playing the Giants, Latos has pitched many innings in his young career against San Francisco and has put up fabulous numbers.

If the Reds play the Giants, and if it were me, and I know this is unconventional, I would go:

    Latos game 1
    Bailey game 2
    Cueto game 3
    Latos game 4
    Cueto game 5

I know the Reds brass would never do that, but that's what I'd do.
