    Draft Notes: Gray, Appel
By Tim Dierkes [April 18 at 1:08pm CST]
The 2013 Rule 4 draft takes place on June 6th, with the Astros, Cubs, Rockies, Twins, and Indians taking the first five picks. You can check out the full draft order here. The latest draft info:

6-foot-4, 240 pound Oklahoma righty Jonathan Gray is shooting up draft boards. ESPN's Keith Law had him eighth on March 14th, but now has him as the clear number two player behind another college righty, Stanford's Mark Appel. Gray, who hit 101 in several recent games according to scouts who talked to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports, was drafted by the Royals in the 13th round in 2010 and the Yankees in the 10th round in 2011, and now projects to go very early in the 2013 draft. Oklahoma head baseball coach Sunny Golloway told ESPN's Teddy Mitrosilis, "He's going to Houston or the Cubs, No. 1 or No. 2."
Appel is "still clearly the best player in this draft," in the eyes of Law. Law wonders if the Astros or Cubs can "try to work out a deal less than the recommended bonus number but more than the figure Appel turned down from the Pirates last year ($3.8 million), with the carrot of a big league callup in September if he throws well after signing." Appel is an advisee of the Boras Corporation.

Assigned Pick Values, Bonus Pools By Team

Below are the assigned pick values for each team’s selections in the first 10 rounds of the 2013 draft. These values have increased by 8.2 percent compared to last year’s numbers, mirroring the rise in MLB’s revenues in 2012.

The total of each team’s assigned values is used to determine its bonus pool. Any bonus money spent in the first 10 rounds, or any in excess of $100,000 to a player drafted in rounds 11-40, counts against a club’s pool. If a player in the first 10 rounds doesn’t sign, his assigned value is removed.

The Astros, owners of the No. 1 overall pick for the second straight year, have the largest pool at $11,698,800. The Nationals, who choose last in each round and gave up their first-rounder to sign free agent Rafael Soriano, have the smallest pool at $2,737,200.

There are penalties for clubs that exceed their bonus pools: a 75 percent tax on a 0-5 percent overage; the loss of a first-round pick and a 75 percent tax for more than 5 and up to 10 percent; the loss of first- and second-rounders and a 100 percent tax for more than 10 and up to 15 percent; and the loss of two-first-rounders and a 100 percent tax for more than 15 percent.

    REDS
    Round Pick Assigned Value
    1 27 $1,812,400
    1s 38 (competitive-balance lottery) $1,470,500
    2 67 $832,700
    3 104 $496,000
    4 135 $367,900
    5 165 $275,400
    6 195 $206,200
    7 225 $160,500
    8 255 $149,900
    9 285 $139,900
    10 315 $135,300
    Bonus Pool $6,046,700

With this years draft, I am only interested in where Clint Frazier and Austin Meadows go.

Clint Frazier in Colorado would be scary.

Will be interesting to see how the board develops over the next six months.
Four months later, I'd still be happy with any of these selections, with the exception of Mercado. Another guy who interests me is Oklahoma HS catcher Jonathan Denney. The last time the Reds picked a catcher named John(ny) out of an Oklahoma HS, it worked out pretty well.

Anyone have any arms they really like or dislike in this draft? Only six weeks until draft day.

I have just started to look at this stuff, NFL draft is the first priority of trivial time wasting. But I kind of like Aaron Judge, (I know his size is crazy, as is his strikezone size) and Colin Moran.

Not a fan of Dominic Smith, first base only type, with questions about his power. Pass.
The Sox traded Bullfrog the only player they've got for Shottenhoffen. Four-eyes Shottenhoffen a utility infielder. They've got a whole team of utility infielders.

I worry about Judge being a Richie Sexson type, but his bat could be sufficiently interesting.

Ryan Boldt with the 38th supplemental pick?

    http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/0...edium=facebook

Baseball America's Jim Callis reports that Ryan Boldt, a high school outfielder from Red Wing, Minn., will undergo arthroscopic surgery to repair a slight tear in his meniscus. Boldt was a potential first-round pick, and Callis feels that even with the injury he will still go "pretty high" because he was so good last summer (Twitter links).
ESPN's Keith Law feels that Boldt's injury could drop him out of the first round and may ultimately lead Boldt to honor his commitment to Nebraska rather than sign out of high school (Twitter link). Law ranked Boldt as the 13th best prospect (Insider required) in this year's class in mid-April.

JP Crawford, Austin Wilson, Jon Denney, and Trey Ball are all guys who are not consensus Top 5 (and therefore could feasibly fall to the Reds) who I'd be very happy with. Anybody have anyone specific they like or don't like in this draft? We're less than a month away.

Colin Moran and Hunter Renfroe are interesting as well, although unlikely to fall out of the top 20.
