Which Pitcher Are You Banking On?

If you were to sign one Reds pitcher through 2017, who would it be?

    Cueto is 26 and a FA after 2014 (has a $10MM option for 2015).
Bailey is 26 and a FA after 2015.
Latos and Leake will soon turn 25 and are FA after 2016.

Assume for these purposes that very roughly, it would cost about the same amount to lock up 3 FA years of Cueto, 2 FA years of Bailey + 3 arb years, and 1 FA year of Latos + 3 arb years. Obviously at this point, it would likely cost substantially less to lock up Leake. So with that said, which horse would you pay to lockup through 2017?

Separate question: Using the parameters outlined above, how would you prioritize them?

You are a poll making fiend my friend. In order...
    1) Latos: Healthy, young buck. Can probably still be had without uber-contract. Now's probably a good time if they're looking to lock him up.
    2) Bailey: That post-season start made me drool, but this is riskier than a Latos deal IMO.
    3) Leake: Not a huge priority, but I wouldn't mind having him kicking around the back of the rotation for the next five years at a decent price.
    4) Cueto: I love the guy, but tying up half our payroll in Cueto and Votto is a burden I don't think we have the luxury of bearing.

Incredibly tough choice. I picked Cueto simply because his contract basically ends first (option not withstanding). Latos & Bailey need to be extended without a doubt though IMO. Leake, I go year to year with him until he really shows what he's going to be.

I agree with all of this except for the part re: Leake. I'd look to move him and Stubbs in a package deal, along with any minor leaguer that isn't a Top 3 pitching prospect or BH to help with the OBP this team has ahead of Votto.

The club needs to lock up Latos while he is still affordable. Cueto would be second on my list but also a high priority.

I don't have much of a problem looking to move Leake/Stubbs. I was simply saying if we were going to keep these pitchers listed, Leake I wouldn't do more than year to year with until we have more of a book on him.

Re: Which Pitcher Are You Banking On?

Latos is the easy answer. My order is:

    Latos
    Bailey
    Cueto
    Leake

Cueto is third only because he's basically under contract through 2015. No need to extend him yet, IMO.

I love Cueto as a Red, but he's quickly becoming a very valuable trade chip. Just sayin'.

I voted Latos and then would do Bailey and Leake.

Agree with this. I would not extend Mike Leake at this juncture. I love Cueto but we already have an option on him through 2015. I would go year-to-year with Bailey because of the injury (and inconsistency) risk. If I'm extending any pitcher this offseason, it's a Matt Moore-type option-laden deal with Latos.
