    Birthdays: 12/4

    Reds:

Stan Jefferson (49) -Appeared briefly with the 1991 Reds. Later became a New York City cop, and was on duty at the World Trade Center after thr 9/11 attacks.

Lee Smith (54) -Held the career save record for 13 years. Was scouted for the Cubs by the legendary Buck O'Neill.

    Others:

David Green (50) -Nicaraguan super prospect, who never achieved the stardom predicted for him.

Harvey Kuenn -Shortstop turned outfielder turned manager of the first Brewers World Series champs. Once kicked a 53-yard field goal in high school.

Bob Shawkey -Known as "Bob the Gob" because he had been in the navy. Winning pitcher in the first game at old Yankee Stadium.

Jesse Burkett -Nicknamed "The Crab", he was the first West Virginian to make the HOF. His plaque there says he hit .400 three times, but subsequent research shows it was only two.

That golden nugget about Stanley Jefferson is why I love this thread. Just wow.

And I remember David Green as an early Cardinal version of Willie Greene. Although Herzog was smart enough to get Jack Clark for him before his bloom had faded.

During Kuenn's tenure as manager of Milwaukee ('82 and '83) the roster included Cecil Cooper, Ben Oglivie, Ted Simmons, Gorman Thomas, and future Hall of Famers Paul Molitor and Robin Yount. This hard-hitting crew was known as Harvey's Wallbangers.

Also, Gorman Thomas's moustache is in the Hall of Fame. It was a true pioneer, paving the way for facial hair that would be worn by the likes of Corky Miller and Sam Lecure.
