Minor league teams can also participate in the draft. AAA teams can draft any player eligible from AA for $12,000, and AA teams can draft any players that are eligible from Class A for $4,000. Players chosen in the minor league part of the draft do not need to return to the original teams for any reason.

Minor League Rule V is mostly about filling holes in the system. I figured they would take a shortstop if Bill and Freddie could find one. With Hamilton moving to center and Juan Perez cut out more for second base, all you had for Bakersfield AND Pensacola was Lohman, and he is more of a second baseman too. That is an excellent pickup and a much-needed one. This may allow them to move Perez to second, get Wright to third where he belongs, and start Vincej out in Dayton instead of trying to jump him a level to Bakersfield. Vincej in Dayton will help the young pitchers tremendously.

Dennick...lefty reliever, looks like a good arm worth taking a chance on. Really short on lefty relievers in the mid-minors. Bakersfield had Howell and then just a fill-in guy with Joyce. Dayton went most of the year with no lefties in the pen at all, which hamstrings the manager. Nice pickup.

Thought they might take a catcher for Bakersfield. Must not have been anyone there.

Couple things to keep in mind about the AAA and AA portions of the draft: Players selected can be assigned to any level and would never have to be offered back to their original organizations, as klw stated. Players who were left off the 40-man that the organization actually cared about keeping (ie: Juan Duran) were protected on the Triple-A roster in the Rule V, making them eligible only for the Major League Rule V (even though Duran won't play in Triple-A next year). We don't know who was protected on which rosters.

Players taken in the Minor League Rule V are really going to effect the farm clubs more than they would ever effect the big league club, other than the fact that their presence helps the prospects develop in a more favorable situation.

This. Dennick was a redundant selection. Manno has that crafty southpaw role covered.

I'm guessing Mano and Dennick will play dueling southpaws in the Louisville bullpen at some time this season. It may be to start the season, but I suspect it'll be later on. AA Pennsacola needs a decent LH in the pen, too.

Ryan Dennick has started 8 games with one relief appearance at AA. In 51 innings he has 37K with only 11 walks with a 2.82 ERA. With Marshall hurting, Cingrani committed as rotation depth and Manny Parra kind of iffy, it may be time to move Dennick to the AAA bullpen to see if he may be an option. He's 26 and best of all, left handed. Cingrani is currently the ony left handed arm on Louisville's roster. The Reds need options IMO. Time to give this kid a little more attention.

Curious thing about Dennick is that he has never been a starter in the minors until this season. We're in the process of trying to convert him, either because that looks like the better use of his abilities or he's just filling a minor league gap until somebody else is ready. Probably means there's not a lot of FO confidence that he can do the job as a reliever at the higher levels.

Stephenson (4-3) struck out eight and walked only one, allowing one run on six hits. Over his last four starts, he is 3-0 with a 1.44 earned run average, allowing two walks with 33 strikeouts over 25 innings.

Bump. With his promotion to AAA, this is a good time to revisit a discussion of his potential. My guess is that with Galarraga gone, he will start at Louisville. His K/9 has been down this year, but that might be attributable to pitching longer stints as a starter. Perhaps, the move is intended to create another late season emergency option in either starter or bullpen role.
